Ok, got another tough one.

When the engine is cold and I rev it above 1,500 rpms it makes a scratching sound. Sounds like metal scratching against metal. The sound seems to come from the valve area and matches engine rpm. However, it no longer makes that sound once I put the car into gear. So it must be a transmission problem right? But the noise isn't coming from the transmission, it's coming from below the valve cover.

What I meant to say was it doesn't make the sound while I'm in gear. While I'm in neutral and the engine is cold it does. Sounds like valves grinding. It get louder and faster as rpms go up, starting at about 2k. Anyone?
