Hey guys well i was bored tonight and figured i would try porting, i had an old 2G o2 housing laying around so i figured i would practice on this. I have NEVER ported anything or tried before and dont know what do use or what step to use it in. if anyone has any info on how they do it i would appriciate it. well i have a 90% die grinder kit that came with stones and pads from Matco tool guy (i work at a GM dealership) so i used that doing this, i used 2 stones already and dont think im the greatest by far so im seeking help and info. heres what i got so far, im going to buy more bits/stones tommarow at a local hardware store i just need to know what to get. and what to polish with thanks guys

OHH also i got rid of that step or the ledge that everyone talks about

Looks like you just smoothed up the casting more than anything.. You need to go out and get a carbide bit to actually cut into it. You still got lots of metal to remove where the wastegate routing comes back into the main exhaust path..

And spend a bit of time on your gasket sealing surfaces they are F--ked and will leak for sure.
did you just free hand it or did you have a gasket laying around also and used it a guide?
Here is what I use myself when I port.

I bought the delux model and I LOVE it!! It is the best kit that I have found by far!! You have lots of work to do on that housing and it will leak like a pig with all of those scratches that you have put on the gasket surfaces. Keep on trying you will get better with time. You also need the right tools to do the job, order a small kit and give them a try or just get the delux kit.

Do they sell that kit on that site or no?... that kit looks great, you get everything to do basic porting..
I bought that kit from Summit a few years ago. With that kit and a carbide bit, I was able to port my cylinder head. A carbide bit would definitely speed things up, especially on things like manifolds and O2 housings.

Yes they still sell those kits, They work very well for aluminum and steel, yo can go the carbide bit way but those tend to chew up the casting and make more work getting out all of the grooves that those make. Rember you want to have the smoothest possible surface when you are porting.

Here is my buddys Prob Turbo head that I ported the living sh*t out of. It is the one on the top :)

Notice how shiny the ports are on top that's what you want yours to look like when you are done. I hope that this helps.

Here are a couple more pics that I found of my pistons before I polished them. (I got rid of the casting marks on them).
One piston before polishing and one after....What a difference ha =)

Here are all 4 pistons polished up.

Here is another one of all of them done, I was getting ready to put the head on at this time notice the Commetic HG =)

I hope that htese give you an idea of what you have to do.

Sorry about the quote I hit the wrong button =(
Sorry, maybe a stupid question, but I understand that porting allows more air to flow through a given space, but polishing makes the given space more efficient. Now i've got a 1g o2 housing laying around and I don't have the things necessary to do a real port job. So will just using my dremel to polish the o2 housing to as smooth as possible really do anything? Or should I wait till I port, and then polish?

Or just not waste your time because its not worth it. Polishing your car to make it more aerodynamic would be time better spent. Haha

Not true at all, the polishing makes the surface very smooth which in turn makes the air flow that much faster over it. The less in the way of the air the more preformance you will have.
Shane
There is a difference between smooth, and polish. Polishing usually means getting it to a mirror-like finish. In this case that would be useless as it will get a thin carbon coating after a few days driving.
Having something ported to the point where it is shiny smooth, like polished, is not good for performance on the intake side. The super smooth surface causes fuel to drop out of the air and pool on the floors of the ports. For intake porting, you ideally want it sort of rough to keep the fuel-air charge tumbling.

There is typically little gain to be found hogging out the intake and exhaust ports in most applications. While this is the first place that most "tooners" go for due to looks, it does very little if the bowl shape is still stock. Most gains in porting a head are found by cleaning up the bolws under the valves and simply smoothing out rough areas and casting flash in the runners. Making the runners too large will hurt cylinder filling at low and mid RPM without any gain on the top end.

As far as making a mirror smooth surface on the exhaust side, while it doesnt hurt anything, its also pointless because after a few minutes of running the mirror smooth surface is going to have carbon on it and not be as smooth. Again, going to 120 grit smoothness should be fine.

You really need a high powered 1/4" electric die grinder or an air powered grinder and a few carbide burrs to get any decent sort of porting done. Trying with a dremel is pointless.

Well, I guess I should'nt have said "polished," but more of smoothed. Yes, I know that porting with a dremel is pointless. This is why I'm not porting, just "smoothing." But considering the difference in a smoothed o2 housing and a stock one, I figured that it might not make a huge difference, but at least a noticable difference... ::shrug::

That's a 1g o2 housing. Here's the bits I used for my porting:

I don't know what brand they are, they're all carbide (a guy from work let me use his tools at my old job). Enlarge the main exhaust hole as much as you can (make a template by photocopying the gasket (~ 7% larger zoom). Enlarge the wastegate hole only from the top side, so that you can keep some material in between.

Here's a link to a ton of my porting on my 2g o2 housing. I used a flapper wheel in a dremel to smooth it out later after the porting, then got it ceramic coated.

if you have a 1/4" grinder, you can get carbide bits for relatively cheap from www.mcmaster.com (catalog page beginning at 2470). they run about $10 each. i use a carbide bit, then smooth it a bit with a 120 grit stone and then finish it with 180grit sanding drum. i've never had anything come out badly...
