I have no idea what the hell just happened, HELP!

Ok, here's the story. I have a 95 gst with a stock t-25. about 2 weeks ago my friend was taking it around the block when the turbo blew. He babied back to his garage and I took it off the next day. Bought another used t-25 and installed it last night. It wasn't in the greatest of shape, had some shaft play, both up and down and back and forth, but it wasn't an outlandish ammount. I've never replaced a turbo before, but I double and triple checked everything to make sure it was all back where it should be. I left his place and drove back to my place, about 10 miles or so. I didn't feel like really getting into it, but I got it kida going a few times just to see if I had boost. I take a left into my apartment's parking lot and I hear this kinda "crunch" sound. Instantly I hit the clutch and think "Oh shit, not good" There is this sound coming from under my hood, sounds like a coffee can full of bolts is being shaken around. The sound stays the same whether I'm just coasting or babying it along (I've got about 50 yards to go). I park, get out, and smoke is coming out of my hood and my tailpipe. There's a ton of smoke and I am pissed. I just went to bed and figured that I'd check it in the morning. I get up this afternoon, go outside and start it up. Same GD "bolts in a coffee can" noise, so I shut it off. One of my roommates wakes up about 20 minutes later and I get him to come listen. I pop the hood and go to start the car. I turn the key over and get a lound "GRIND", so I stop.....then I try it again. Car turns over just fine and there is no weird sound. "Rev it up, see if it happens again" I rev....no sound. I get out and we are looking at the engine.....SNAP! The head of one of the exhaust mainfold bolts (back left) snaps off, hits the valve cover, bounces back and nuttags my friend. I run back and shut off the car and that's where I am.

I have no clue what was making that sound, or why the hell it suddenly stopped, or even why a bolt head would snap off. Could the head snapping be attached to the sound in some way? I haven't had a chance yet today to check out the turbo or oil, but does anyone have any ideas as to what could possibly be wrong?

I would bet your turbo bearings siezed, and when they did, the backpressure in the exhaust caused your manifold bolt to snap. Just my guess from what you said. Oh, and a piece of advice (from a former pro mechanic), if you get a sound like that dont keep running the engine. You will end up causing much more damage. Let us know what you find out.
You could have just fatiqued that stud/bolt during the removal and reinstall.

Have you checked the condition of the turbo again after this? Might want to pull the oil feed to make sure it isn't clogged or restricting oil flow to your turbos in any way.

Would the turbo bearings siezing cause that sound? And why would it just suddenly disappear? (I'm not being a smartass, I honestly don't know) I will hopefully get a chance to check it out later today and I will be sure to update.
Alright, just finished looking at my car again. That bolt that the head snapped off of....not even finger tight. I was able to unscrew it with 0 trouble. Could that be what was making the sound? Seems like a small piece to make that much sound. I start it up, no sound and no smoke. I noticed a little bit of oil around the line where it screws in to the turbo, but really nothing other than that. Any new ideas?
Sounds like a lack of oil or water to the turbo...maybe thats why the first one blew.

Your best bet would be to follow greenstreak's advice. Pull it apart and make sure that everything is okay. You'll be much better off if you do, and doing so will help to take some of the guess work out of what happened.
I checked all the lines before I put the turbo on. Everything was clear and good to go, so I don't think that was the problem. Now I am more concerned about the noise and what the hell could have caused it.
Well if it didn't make the sound before its a good chance its coming from the new parts you just put on. Pull it apart stop being lazy, might save some money.
Pulled the turbo and everything seems fine. There is some shaft play, but no more than was there when I installed it. I drove it a couple of miles yesterday and didn't hear anything. It seemed to boost just fine and drive ok....maybe it's ok to drive now, but I'm afraid that it's going to happen again when I'm in the middle of nowhere and then I'm screwed. Any other ideas since it doesn't seem to be the turbo?
