Knock sensor=gooey?

1183 Views 12 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  greenstreak
I've noticed some goop/oily residue coming from my knock sensor. I assume this means time to replace. I'm having some problems tuning my car right now (can't smooth things out), after installing 550 injectors, fuel pump, etc. using a S-AFC II. Is it possible that my knock sensor is mal-functioning causing my timing to be pulled? Where can I get one for cheap?

that's exactly it. When the knock sensor becomes googy it pulls timing if i am not mistaken 9 degrees, get it replaced asap
The fluid is what the inner sensor floats in (I believe).

So if its bouncing around without the fluid there to slow its movement it'll retard timing a varying degree depending on how much noise it 'hears'. Personally my knock sensor accidenttally got yanked out during a clutch swap and threw a CEL.

I believe I got a new one for 56 bucks or so from JNZTuning (see greenstreak) here on the board.
on my knock sensor on the back of it. its soft to the touch does it mean that i have to change it soon ?

I figured that's the issue. Is all I need a xxMM wrench to replace it?
22mm maybe? But yes, if it is all gooey it is done.
I think its bigger than 22mm.
I used an adjustable that when it FINALLY cracked loose it flew up (the wrench) hit me in the face, and almost knocked me unconscious. Me and knock sensors haven't gotten along since. Mine was gooey as well. It also worked for shit. My 1g couldn't pull timing fast enough, then blew its own head off. I don't have a log, but I don't think it even pulled timing. Just BOOM... cough... sputter, and spyhunter. ^ That above was me just trying to get it out of the empty block... so I could replace it later when I built another 6 bolt.

That sucks! I'll break it loose though N/P. I broke loose crank sprocket with a weeny 1/2" drive socket and after that nothing seems too difficult. :D I need this sensor ASAP, no dealer in my area stocks them...and if they did, they want almost $100 for it?!!
I just used a cresent wrench to get mine off. Enjoy they are so fun to get at!! LOL
