loud knocking!?

967 Views 16 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Spyder1gdsm
i just bought my first dsm last night 96 eclipse GST and i ran it on the highway good for about 45min. I get home and then i go back out and everythings still fine. Then when i get gas and start it back up again theres a loud knocking sound? i pulled it into my neighborhood(still knocking really hard) and it jus dies on me on my street. Then i see that there is no coolant left and under the hood is really hot. Is this why it just turned off? and does that loud knocking have something to do with the lifters? I just bought this car yesterday! and its havin problems in the same day!! Please tell me what you think is wrong with this guys! Thank you so much

Did you have the car looked over by a mechanic before you purchased it?

Was the car overheating while this was happening?

Did you check the oil level in the motor?

Where was the knocking sound eminating from?

When it doesn't start what does it do? Spark? Fuel?

As you can see you need to provide a little more information for us if you want anyone to be able to help. ;)
The car wasnt looked over by a mechanic before i bought it

When this knocking occurs the gauge showed that it wasnt over heating

i checked the oil and its good but the oil gauge says nothings in it when i start it up? atleast it did last night

the knocking sound is coming from the engine i'm pretty sure thats why i was thinking that it might be the lifters but not sure

It starts fine, it just died on me last night but started right back up

i hope these make it more clear on my problem
thanks
Wait it only did it once?
If you bought it at a dealer I hope you got a warranty...
knocking noise... is not good.
A lifter sounds more like a sharp injector click but louder. And would go away with a quick refill of oil and a gentle rev to 3K and slowly back down.

The oil gauge is oil PRESSURE. Not how much oil... It takes a second or two to build up from a cold start. It will also increase with rpm.

Just tell me you didn't put 87 in it when you filled up.
i bought the car from a private seller so theres no warranty, i asked the guy who sold me the car what gas he used and he said jus the regular non-preminum stuff even tho it says premium only... and i didnt put the 87 in.. i put the super in... would you think that becuz the guy put the crap stuff in it; it has anything to do with it? the car is all stock execpt for the exhaust
thanks
Long term knocking because of the wrong fuel could cause problems.

Lifters are described as ticking not knocking. A knocking like that is a sign of a bad problem usually.
*shakes head*
:(
Instructions are there for a reason. Now if people would just follow them...

I hope for your sake it was just some bad gas from sitting or something.
If its clunking around... and dying...
NOT good.
Time to get your hands dirty.
I'd start by doing all the simple maintenance stuff you can possibly afford. As a cheapskate that wouldn't even put 89 in... probably did squat to the rest as well. I wish you the best of luck. :D
You're going to need it.
what is it when its clunking around and dying?
remove your spark plugs, turn your crank pully by hand untill your #1 piston starts its downstroke, get a long srewdriver with a blunt end so you dont hurt the piston. insert it into the spark plug hole and lightly let it sit on the piston. now take note of how high the screwedriver stands. hold the scrwedriver steady, Now push down on it (not too hard, your not trying to move the crank). nothing should move. if you feel the piston go down a little bit, you have a spun bearing. Repeat at each cylinder.

Yes, this is a ghetto method, but if your rod bearings are damaged badly enough that you can hear a knock, this will verify it.
Does it sound like "Klah, Klah Klah, Klah"? If so, does it sound louder as the RPMs increase?. Good luck if it does. That's what happend to me when I spun a rod bearing...a nightmare man!... BTW How much did you get your GST for?
i bought the gst for 4900... ok so we have pretty much narrowed it down to being inside the head, and were thinking its a bent valve after talking to some people who have listened to the car itself ... now tomorrow me and my dad are taking off the head.. how hard is it to take off? can you just take the head out without taking the block off too? also does anyone have a manual or anything of anykind that can show us exactly how to take it off correctly... another quiestion.. how hard would it be to replace the valve if that is the problem? im hopin it is becuz i want to get this car up and moving again. :( Thanks for the input guys i appreciate it

I would pull the oil pan and see if there is any silver looking deposits in the pan. Next check every rod moving them with your fingers they should all be tight, if you find one loose, then thats the one with a bad bearing. Remove the rod cap and inspect the bearing and crank journal for scratches. If its groved, you are going to have to rebuild the bottom end along with replacing the engine front cover and oil pump gears oem parts only. You might consider a balance shaft elim kit as well to boost the oil pressure to all moving parts. You can also put a large screwdriver between the mains and crankshaft to see if there is any back and forth movement in the shaft if there is, its called crankwalk and I would replace the seven bolt engine with a six bolt engine. ...Three diamonds.

Do a compression test first to see if it is a bad valve before you guys pull the head.....Three diamonds.
ya we did a compression test and one of the valves tested low
alright so we still havent gotten around to taking the head out and i really wanna start on this soon... see the problem is the timing belt and taking the whole head off with the belts and putting it back in... There seems like there is no space there to have enough room to work? does anyone know how to get to the bottem belt and be able to put it back in? thanks
Drain your oil and look for copper deposits in it. I'm thinking you spun a rod bearing.
