New head, old parts?

514 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  busa4
Hey guys. I am in the process of putting my 92 TSI back together and i finally got my head today. The head i revieced has no cam caps, cams or rockers. I am pretty sure that if i keep the cam caps in the correct order this should be a simple process? Also The Tbelt when on the car (I got it cheaply becuase of this) 10/16 valves shot, but I am assuming that the rockers are usually undamaged as I do not think I have seen a rocker take on damge because of anything liek that. Soo question is, my old Cam caps, cams and rockers should work in this new head correct? Sorry if this is a bit confusing.

Thanks again.

Your cams and rockers will work as long as the head didn't take a major hit (with those numbers of bent valves I'd assume you're ok but w/out seeing not 100%). Check the lobes on the cams before re-installing.

However, the cam caps will not work. They're not interchangable between heads unless you find a shop that can bore them correctly, which isn't an easy task. We take head cores only if they have the original cam caps (order from head to head is the same, but they won't line up correctly for the cams to spin) because of this.

alrighty than so i need to.......what the hell do i need to do? I am getting that if this head did not come with cam caps i am screwed? I didnt thoughly look it over but ya. So if it did come with cam caps, i can basically just throw the cams+rockers in there assuming that they are in great condition? Thanks alot for the first reply.
Yes if the head cam with cam caps (assuming they're the ones from that head) you should be able to re-assemble no problem. Of course verify that the cams spin freely once torqued down before going through the rest of the install, but it should be alright at that point.

Thank you very much. Your working at Slowboy and repling to problems like these on the forum really helps promote your business. I thank you very much again.
the cam caps are part of that individual head and should of come with the head. if your going to use another cylinder head's cam caps you should have it aligned bored. they all dont share the same alignment. each cap and bearing journal are unique and should never be seperated or mixed up.
