Over the weekend I noticed an odd noise coming from near where the platic timing belt cover is on my 98 Galant. It really sounds like something is hitting a large flat piece of plastic. I took the top inspection cover off of the timing belt and everthing looks fine there. I also put the palm of my hand on the cover with the engine idleing and didn't feel any vibrations on the cover that matched the knocking noise. I checked that the power stearing pump and everything else mounted to the fender were attached tightly and I could'nt move any of the accessories with the motor off. All the belts look good too. Timing belt was replaced about 30k miles ago. Does anyone have a clue what this noise could be? It's in time with the engin revs 1:1 when it's happening, but it's very erratic. I might get 10 good knocks followed by a minute of silence. And it lessens once the engine is warmed up.
