Does anyone know where i can find some good information on radar detecters? I bought a cheap one once ($70) and i really didn't like it. I want a high quality unit for around $150 -$200 but i don't know the differance between the manufacturers, who sells hype and who sells quality, you know?

i paid 200 canadian or so, and got a bell radar detector. it was pretty good. it saved a friend of mine many times.but if valentine is said to be really good and never hear bad things about them, i would say it would be a good idea. after all you get what you pay for. they are the ones i would buy.

I run a cheap, less than $100, Whistler 1430. It works like a charm. Haven't had a ticket since. It has front and back detection for x,k,ka, and laser. Although a radar detector isn't a license to speed. It may just tell you that you are getting a ticket, if some common sense isn't also applied. ie: seems there is always a RED ford f-250 (or something or other) willing to drive faster and give me a "signal car."

If i could afford the valentine i would get that one for sure. I've heard the escort passport is really good, but its $230. Does anyone have anything bad to say about the passport?

I have a middle of the road Cobra that has treated me very well. I don't know the model number off hand but it doesn't have a read out screen, just the basic led's. The 360 degree detection on it is excellant, and usually warns me pretty far in advance, no tickets yet (knock on wood!). I would recommend it, they have also been around for a while.

Actually i used to have a cobra with 360 degree protection, and that is the one i didn't like. I actualy gave it to a freind cause i didn't want it. Way too many false alarms, and not enough range.

Hey gsxalex. Since you're gonna be movin to Cali there's something you should know. The California Highway Patrol doesn't use radar. So it'll be completely useless to get it. The SDPD uses them but they always hide out. That makes the radar signal almost undetectable until you are right in front of them. It might help you once in a while but for the most part it's useless to have it here. Just watch out for cops. That has kept me ticket free.

I have a Valentine One and it is the best I have ever used. It gives you alot of data to interpret.

The Phaser/Rocky Mountain radar jammers are a total scam (jammers that work are illegal). I have done extensive field testing with my best friend (a cop) while he was on patrol. In every instance, he said he would have given me a ticket. Furthermore, the "no ticket" guarantee does not apply if you are going greater than 10 mph over the posted speed. You usually don't get a ticket for less than 10 over anyways. Absolutely do not purchase these jammers. Please feel free to contact me if you have other questions.

What the Highway Patrol does here is they will drive at the same speed that you are and that's how they determine how fast you are driving.

What???

"What the Highway Patrol does here is they will drive at the same speed that you are and that's how they determine how fast you are driving."

So that means their either beside you or in your rearview mirror?
What do they do, follow you in a honda or a minivan to stay undercover?
Nobody speeds when they see a cop, that wouldn't really work, i don't think.

They must time you from an airplane or something else.

I have had both a fairly expensive Whistler, and a Bel, and currently a Valentine. The Valentine simply blows them all away. It picks up signal from MUCH (like double) farther away than the other two, and it has the benefit of directional location. IMO, there is no better protection (expect for obeying the laws, of course) :)
