Remote starter in a 5 spd?

4066 Views 11 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  99GSXTC
I have a remote car starter laying around and would like to put it in my 95 GSX with a 5 spd. Do our cars have neutral safety switches? If so I thought that I could use it so that the remote start will only work if the car is in neutral. Has anyone ever tried this? Any tips or tricks for me?

There is no way for the car to know what gear its in. On a manual transmission the car being in "neutral" for starting purposes is having the clutch pushed in. So if you were to wire it up, you would have to bypass the clutch circuit so that the car would start without the clutch being depressed. Keep in mind however, if you wire it up like this, it can and WILL start in gear.
I have heard that you can use a magnetic switch to detect when the shifter is neutral and only allow it to function at that point. Search around and im sure that it has been discussed here before. Maybe someone else can chime in and be more technical but its at least an idea for you.
i can start mine with out the clutch in...dont know why but i can!
Unplug the harness behind the clutch pedal and the car will start without touching the clutch.

Its alright to do as long as you can remember to leave the car out of gear everytime you wish to start it remotely.
you guys are gonna end like my mustang, driving by itself because i miscalibrated the neutral switch, but yes there is a way to tell the alarm the car is in neutral, here you go:

i highly suggest not doing it. on top of the damage you may cause your car, you don't want to be responsible for hurting someone. i did a remote start alarm for a customer of mine designed specificly for manual tranny's. i don't remember the brand, he got it off ebay, if you can find it it is the ONLY system i recommend.
because it does not use a sensor or circuit. there i a 4 step process you must perform in order for it to work. sensors and circuits can fail.
with this before you get out of the vehicle you leave the key in with the motor running, pull the ebrake, put the car in neutral, push the valet button, it then acts as a turbo timer, take the key out and exit the vehicle, te car remains running, and as soon as you arm the system it will shut the car off, then you can remote start it.
if this process isn't performed before you exit the vehicle it will not remote start. sorry such a long post, i'll try to find the alarm and let you know the brand.
I got this idea from an earlier post on this subject. Do a search.
I made a neutral start switch using a N.O. magnetic alarm switch from RadioShack, cut to fit.
I used the Pbrake switch for the ground. The car won't start unless it is in neutral and Pbrake is on. Unplug the clutch relay and connect the remote start wires there to bypass the clutch switch.

It's probably a Compustar 2WSS Alarm. I've had one installed in my 5-speed Eclipse for over a year with no issues whatsoever. You have to follow a certain sequence, more or less what you said, before exiting the car. This insures the car is not in gear. The only way it would start in gear is if you messed up the install, or put it in gear through an open window.

It's pretty failsafe.
That's awsome, I've been trying to come up with a way to remote start my DSM. I only drive 5 speeds, so this will have to do. It's too friggin cold to deal with the car in the morning!!
Take it to a shop.

My car has the clutch harness disconneted even before I got the alarm installed.

dedlewamp is right. For my compustar alarm, it has a special sequence that you have to do for the remote start function to work on a 5 spd. ( like he said)

I got it installed for 80 CDN, so I shouldn't brake the bank down there.

On a seperate note, the only troble I've had with the alarm is the hood pin. Always messes up and drives me nuts. I really want an electronic one.
Any of the compustar remote starts will make you go through the sequence. I work at a custom shop and thats the only alarm remote start we use on manual transmission cars. And yes, you can use a magnetic switch to tell the alarm that the gear shifter is in neutral. Have any other questions on it, let me know.

Have a great day!!
