Starter Relay Gone Bad?

9706 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Vallary99
I've had a starter issue for a few weeks now that I have dealt with, but am going to take care of this week. I have a new starter, but sometimes it just clicks when I turn the ignition. However, if I rapidly turn it from "ACC" to "ON" several times, it will finally start and fire up the engine. Sometimes it will start on the first turn, although it takes a few seconds to crank the motor. It sounds like a starter relay issue to me, but what do you guys think? I would think if a ground was bad it wouldn't start at all, but I will go through all that when I check it out just to eliminate that possibility. Any suggestions before hand would be appreciated.

Check your battery connections to make sure they are securely tight on the posts. Sometimes when the connections are loose, the high voltage demand from the starter will make the starter just Click and not start the engine.
So whatever happened with this? I have the SAME exact problem with my '97 GST. Here's what I've tried:

New Starter Cable Harness
New Starter

Still same problem. Now I took off the dust cover on the bellhousing and looked up at the starter gear while cranking the car and it looks like it extends out and bangs into the flywheel instead of the teeth meshing with it and subsequently rotating to start the motor.

But it is all seemingly random . . .
I agree, check wiring. Sounds like a bad ground. What is your battery voltage reading. If it drops below 11v you will definetly have this problem.
I have the same problem. Every notice if you turn your steering wheel some it'll start right up. I personally think (although I haven't fixed mine yet) that it's something to do with the wires in the steering column. The way the steering wheel is turned is either pinching, pulling, or cutting into the wires and when you turn the steering wheel it releases those wires and the car will start. My dad (shade tree mechanic but knows his stuff) told me it sounds like loose connections somewhere. I've deicded to start with the steering column and go from there. Hope that helps some. Let me know if it works.
