Unless your steering rack was previously out, then you won't have to disconnect the steering shaft. But if you really need to, it's not that hard. I just put my manual rack from my race gsx into my gvr4 two days ago. Just take out the 12mm bolt that goes through the steering shaft just below the universal joint. Then lower your steering rack down, or I suppose you could drop the steering column and raise it up.
You may have to take a screwdriver or prybar and spread the splined joint apart a bit, but it will just slide apart. Then re-adjust and slide back together. Once you have it lined up correctly, you should only have to tap lightly with a hammer to get it slid in all the way.
