suspension problem

835 Views 10 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  belittle
I recently put a drop suspension on my car. It consists of the KYB GR2 shocks and the Tanabe DF210 2" lowering springs. The problem is when the car hits a man hole or similar type bump there is a metal on metal clank. With the car raised the spring is lose which normally will happen, but I think that this may be my problem. How do I resolve this annoying problem?

So I guess that no one has ran into this problem. What am I doing wrong? Please help! I have the car jacked up to look back over everything while it is in storage.
Your problem is that you lowered a 2G by 2" using low-rate springs on shocks that are as long as stock. You need different springs or different shocks or both.

"Metal on metal contact" Sounds like there are no bumpstops. Get some, and get better springs, such as Eibach Prokit.
Sounds more to me a ball joint problem. Is the noise more pronouced while turning? I have recently had this same problem with my 97gsx that has stock suspension. I pulled the far lower ball joint (the s shaped one) and sure enough the ball joint is very bad. It is warn enough to have the ball joint move up and down while it's in place. Are you also having a shimmy over 65mph? I have had my car aligned twice, and both tie rod ends replaced and still have a shimmy over 65.
IIRC there was a recall on the front lower balljoint for the 2G.

That recall consisted of only one of the lower ball joints on each side. If its worth anything, my recall was done below 30k miles. The car sit now with 83k and almost all my ball joints are bad.

Might be worth it to call a Mitsu dealer and find out. Always nice to get free shit from satan.

Which shocks that you can buy are shorter? Like the KYB AGX are they better. I don't want a linear spring I'd much rather have a progressive one like I have.
Just changed my ball joint out yesterday and the clanking is gone. Give it a try.
