I have a general technical question about 2G Turbo timing and operation of the valves. I am replacing my timing belt by myself for the first time. (paid a shop the 1st time). Anyway. I have the VFAW in hand and have searched this forum, but I cannot answer this question:

When the cam gears are 'aligned' exhaust at 3 o'clock and intake at 9 o'clock, the position needed on initial timing setup with cyl #1 & 4 at TDC, it looks as though the intake valves for cyl#3 have just closed (pushing the intake cam gear just above the 9 o'clock position) AND the exhaust valves for cyl#3 are just about to open (pushing the exhaust cam gear up just slightly away from the 3 o'clock position). When I think about clockwise rotation of the engine crank and cam gears, it looks like the valves are opening at the wrong order. Typical 4 stroke would have the exhaust valves open for the exhaust stroke than the intake valves open for the intake stroke, then compression, combustion, back to exhaust stroke. What am I missing, or am I over anylizing this???? I don't want to crash my head...

Thanks in advance for help on this topic / disertation... (sorry long post).

engine rotation direction???

OK, I am a car/engine novice... The engine in the DSM rotates "clockwise" right? Is that from the perspective when looking at it from the front (timing belt end) or from the back of the engine (psgr side)??

back to original question...

So things rotate clockwise when looking from the timing belt side. So then why (when cam gears have timing marks aliggned at 3 o'clock on exh and 9' on intake) does the intake valves on cyl#3 just close when piston 3 is at the bottom, and then the exhaust valves open on it's way up. this make sense from intake open on the piston's way down, but there should be a compression and power stroke in between the intake valves opening and the exhuast valves opening, or since this is a turbo charged engine, do things happen a little differently???

my mistake...

OK, I am a big F- up. I was having the 'outer' like timing marks align to each other... instead of like 'inny' on the exhaust side lining up with the 'outy' on the intake side....

While this is the correct way.

Silly me.

Anyway, while I am confessing. I tightened my head bolts with two 180 degree turns instead of two 90 degree turns. Obviously, I will back everything out and repeat it correctly, but will overtightening and leaving it set that way for 24 hours compress the head gasket in a way in which in may make it problematic?

previous post.

well, the attempt at using text for illustration did not work in the previous post... the hyroglifics (spelling?) are supposed to represent the cam gears. the spaces compressed themselvs after I submitted to through it off...
