why is there oil and a gas smell all over my spark plugs? 98 gs-t, with a month old valve gasket. no other leaks around engine? my plugs are bassicaly saturated in oil when i take them out. and this is causeing my car to start only sometimes. what can i do to stop the oil from doing this?

Is it oil in the sparkplug wells or in the cyllinder itself?

If in the wells then you prol didn't replace the (4) spark plug gaskets with the valve cover gasket.. or didn't tighten the VC in the correct sequence / correct tork spec.. or the gasket shifted when you installed it.

If in the cylinder itself.. valve seals or Head Gasket.

but you may be right about the head gasket. isn't that a big bitch to replace?
less of a bitch than replacing the engine.

Check your oil for coolant contamination, check which plugs are oil coated, and compression test your cyls to pinpoint where it's leaking from.

Is the oil in the plug wells or is the oil only on the electrode end of the plug and everything on top dry?

everything on the top id bone dry. it's only the bottom that is saturated in oil. i took it to mitubishi to find out what the problem was when it wouldn't start. between the towing fee and everything else... they charged me $260 to tell me that they didn't know. gotta love stuff like that.

I had to put valve seals on my (now gone) 92 laser at about 90,000 miles. How many miles are on your car? Also, are all four plugs fouled?

Are all four plugs fouled the same? The reason I ask is because it is unlikely that a blown head gasket or broken rings would produce more than fouling in one or maybe two cylinders. If all four plugs look the same, either they aren't firing or the oil is coming in from the intake.

The source for intake oil generally is the turbo but, if you did break a ring, excessive blowby could also carry oil over to the intake.

So, check out the turbo for shaft play. Also, pull the vent hose on the end of of valve cover and check for excessive blowby. I'm surprised the garage didn't do these checks.

oh i don't think those checks are covered in the cost of what i payed. (very thick sarcasm)
never again will i go back to mitsu. for anything. i will have to say, they did give me a free coffee. :D
i will do that and get back to you.
thanks for the advise!

Not to hijack the thread, but I have the same exact problem. When I pulled my plugs out, all of them had unburnt gas on them (I could smell the fuel on them) and they were full of soot. I have so far changed the coil pack, plugs, wires, and the ingnition module (A.K.A. power transistor).

Fuel is flowing, but I have not checked the compression. I have tryied to start the car in gear and the motor moved. Does that mean I have enough compression?

did you try and clean the plugs off? everytime my car wouldn't start i pulled the plugs out and wiped them off with a clean rag. when i put them back in... the car would start right up. and your right about the unburnt fuel smell. it is very strong.

do you know what might help also?... if you try opening the throttle body to let more air in right before you start it.

so far it has started for the past six days in a row after i cleaned the plugs off. so good luck to you!

thanks for your advice! I have new set of plugs and still it doesn't start.

This thread is on an oil consumption problem. not fuel/spark.

Generally speaking when you start post with "Not to Hijack" you're better off starting a new thread where your problem will be the center of discussion :p

I guess I misunderstood eclipseGS-t9811 first statement, which was: "why is there oil and a gas smell all over my spark plugs?"

Anyway, I will start a new thread. Please help if you can
