After i changed my belts my crank puller makes a like clucking sound while its turns , would too much tention do this ? I have a sound file on my computer of it is there a way to upload a sounds file ?

Mine did that for 2 weeks til last night it finally popped the outer ring off So I would replace that crank pulley only like 20 minutes!

harmonic balancer ?? can you explain more about this /where is it ? so i can take a better idea of it ?

Just curious, but are you the same guy on Tuners who posted that he thought his car crankwalked because the crank pulley was hitting the frame of the car even after replacing the alternator belt that broke?

This bolts to the end of the crank (actually to the crank timing belt gear which is directly bolted to the crank) and runs you accessory belts. This is called the crank pulley or harmonic balancer.

Nevermind, I just saw that the other guy has a 99 GSX, so it's not you. Strange that you're both from the Philly area and have a similar sounding problem.

so that would make the funny clitch type sound ? if bad/going bad ? It looks like its a pretty simple thing to install , just them 4 bolts. Can i leave all the belts on to do it ? I will look up prices tomorrow.

To check it, you need to loosen the alternator belt and the A/C belt (so there's no tension on the harmonic balancer). Then, grab the outer ring of the balancer with your hands and try to wiggle it from side to side. If you feel or see any movement while the hub of the balancer doesn't move, the outer ring separated from the hub and the balancer needs to be replaced. The cost is around $120.

well i recently lost me power steering belt. The sound really started up after i changed the belt, i changed both front belts. The PS belt and the alternator belt i think they were. I thought maybe too much tension ? i dont have a meter to test i kind of did the pull the belt up with a finger test

If the crank pulley fails whlie you are driving, your car will not make a ten minute trip, let alone a two hour trip. Your car will overheat because the belts will pop off. The worst case scenario is that the belts can get jammed into the timing belt which results in bent valves and a ruined engine. So is it the crank pulley making the noise? How many miles are on your car?

i think its the pully not sure, is there a way i can upload a file or can soeone help me upload one ? so you can hear the sound ?

Why don't you just check the pulley the way I described? You'd know if the pulley's separated in less time then it takes to record the file, upload it and post it here. Plus, no one can tell you for sure if the pulley separated just from listening to some sound file... :dunno:

Good god, not to beat a dead horse but check the damn crank pulley yourself and stop being such a lazy bastard. Loosen your alternator with ONE bolt, you can loosen your ac tensioner with 2 bolts, lay on the ground and grab the pulley and try to spin it. If thats too difficult for you buy a different car because lord knows you wont be able to handle any of the other fun jobs...
