how much shaft play if enough shaft play for the turbo to be considered blown? mine moves in and out a little bit and side to side a little bit. its a lot more play then the other turbo i have. its play is on the stock turbo, and the car blows out bluish white smoke when shifting at WOT.

thanks

If there's enough play for the turbine or exhaust wheel to contact the housing, then the turbo's considered "blown". What you have is either turbo oil seal failure or leaking valve stem seals.

There's always at least some amount of play since the shaft doesn't actually ride on the bearings but a thin layer of oil that keeps the shaft centered once the pressure is up. The SCM50 uses 360-degree bearing to handle the thrust a bit better. Not trying to start some rumours, but seems like there's been a considerable number of failures of the PTE turbos lately. :dunno:
