I 'll be installing a front mount pretty soon and preparing the way so to speak. I *may* be able to trim the stocker(s) but really not sure. I think I need at least one skinny one to replace AC side fan.
I went to RRE the other day and picked one SPAL but not sure if it 'll do. That's the only brand they carry and I didn't want to go home empty handed. First off, it's all plastic and may melt with the future turbo set up. I heard it happens. Second, its CFM rating isn't that great. I got 12" I beleive and 1360 CFM. That was the biggest of the three they have. Which ones do you guys run? And it would be cool to know where to get it from. Also, some don't have a shroud at all as I heard and can't create enough vacuum to pull air through radiator but rather suck it from between the rad and the fan. Any comments on that? Thanks.

Sorry for bumping this one.. just want to know what kind everyone is using without overheating or other issues.
BTW, a local speed shop quoted me $406 for "DSM specific" flex a lite. They said it was the only one that was designed for these cars:eek:

FAL or Flex-A-Lite makes great fans, I've had lots of positive experiences... They make a whole range of fans both car specific and nonspecific... I'd LOVE a set made for the DSM but cost is prohibitive... I'd say if the one you have doesn't work, go with a regular FAL, unless you want some bling under the hood, thier fans for the eclipse are realy nice...

Thanks for the link diambo.
Anytime.;)

You gotta get a fan there asap. It's kinda warming up you know  unless you are in the North Pole.:D

I installed the Spal instead of the rad. fan and tried it around with the AC one disconnected just to see if one would cut. Stock gauge stayed in about the same location but we all know how accurate it is to judge by it:rolleyes: The feel of an upper radiator hose was different though. With two fans working it's pretty soft when I pop the hood up at a stop. With only one working it was pretty 'erected'. If I keep my hand behind it, it feels like it flows a bit less than the AC fan and AC looks a little smaller than the main so make your conclusions.

Guys at RRE told me that the stocker flows in 800 ish but it don't look like it:dunno: Fans of 11" and bigger are recommended to be installed with a gap of at least 1/4" which I did. That means that the shroud is away from the rad. and possibly sucking air in through that gap instead of pulling it through the core. I 'll try to move it closer and see what happens.

Is anyone using the perma cool brand. I read somewhere that they flow a ton, noticeably more than stockers. I don't even know who carries them. Any idea?

I got my slim fans from SBR. They are 12" and flow 1250cfm. Here is what the ads said:

"12" slim line fan
These fans are half the width of the stock fans, 12” in diameter, and flow 1250 cfm. With the 12” versions, you can fit two side by side on your radiator. Comes with mounting tabs and ties to hold them to the radiator, so you won’t need to drill holes or make brackets.
$69.00 "

I will install them the same time as DT fmic kit.

I installed one 16" Mr. Gasket fan.:dunno: Flows 2000CFM!:D It was kinda tricky fitting it in there but it did the job. I was also going to install another for a pusher but a 16" diameter would not fit, so I sold it to my buddy. I would say probably a 12" would suffice for a pusher. That's overkill though. Maybe if I was in Arizona. I have one stock rad fan and it does it's job. No AC fan either.

Well, I just installed my Mr. Gasket 12" that I ordered from the link diambo supplied (1400cfm). Using it as a puller on the passenger side, and wired into the stock wiring. I tested it while idling (90 degree day today). It turns on at 205 degrees and within 30 seconds, the temp drops below 200, at which point it shuts off. It fit absolutely perfect. The mounting tabs on the top and bottom both fit perfectly snug with the top and bottom of the radiator. I could have practically not used the supplied mounting ties. It comes within a quarter inch of my uicp (short route) and a quarter inch of my compressor outlet. Very nice and I would recommend.

So, just to clarify, this fan uses the stock mounting holes?

Also, how did you wire it up? Did it only have two wires? I've read somewhere how to wire up a 2-wire fan to the stock 4-wire harness but don't remember....

No it does not use the stock mounting holes. The ones on the fan are too close together. I cut and spliced into the stock wiring. The ac fan and the passenger side fan are wired differently. I first wired it into the ac fan because I wasn't sure which was which. For that, I just wired the solid blue to the blue wire on the fan, and the solid black to the black wire. But the passenger side was different. I think I wired one of the striped ones to the blue wire and the black to black. I read somewhere that both the striped wires were power and both the solids were grounds, how true that is im not sure. Just test it with a voltmeter beforehand.

Thanks for the pic-- nice setup. My understanding is that there's a power and ground for a Low setting and a power and ground for a High setting.

I am not sure about 2G's but for 1G's, there are only 2 wires. Cut and splice. Since those fans are reversible you have to make sure you wire it correctly since a switch would cause the fan to rotate in the opposite direction.:scholar: You don't want to blow air from your hot engine bay to your already hot radiator.:p

On my PWR rad I have the stocker on the passenger side, and a 10" Low Powered Permacool 10 blade at 800cfm on the drivers side. I got it off ebay for $50, and BTW, the high powered 10" is 1250 cfm for $86.

I have it wired to a toggle in the car and I turn it on whenever I want. I turn it on when I am about to get on it to keep the head temps as low as possible.

That is true. To wire it as a puller, the blue wire is power and the black is ground. As a pusher, it is the opposite.

So i can't find any threads with newer links to these fans you guys are recommending. Links are 3 yrs old almost. I've looked around in a few different places online and various threads.... everytime i run across what seems to be a good deal someone posted in the thread the link just takes me to like the jeggs homepage. if someone has some good links they'd like to share i'd appreciate it. thanks. :D

I got two fans from autozone. Universal, 12 inchers, flow I believe 1500cfm, and it was like 49.99 each. I just put them both infront of the radiator, making it hidden, and much cleaner engine bay. I also wired them to a toggle switch, like most of my other accessories, so when my temp gauge (aftermarket) comes up, I turn them on. I can also turn them off once I go do a pull, and fire them back up when the race is over, making less draw from the battery/charging system.
