Just about got the car put together and found out that this Florida/(federal) car has a California ECU. What are the repercussions of running with this ecu. Will it affect performance or harm anything? (did a search and couldnt find the answer) The car is a 90 gst. Help/insight appreciated. David

uhhh...solder a 1k resistor to location R129 on the ECU board. pretty self explanitory. R129 is twords the upper right corner (if holing the ECU open, facing you, and plugins pointing down)

I've noticed that there are two resistors inside of a white outlined area, R129 & R130. R130 is a 1K ohm 1/8th watt resistor. R129 is blank. So, do I just install a 1K resistor at R129 and leave R130 in place, or do I have to remove R130 after installing R129? Thanks in advance!

I've also noticed that R129 appears to ground pin 60 of the microprocessor. What effect does this have on the programming for CA specs and emissions? Does this disable the CA spec. EGR solenoid and EGR temp. functions?

basically the resistor on 129 tells the ECU to ignore the EGR TEMP signal. AFAIK the EGR valve will still function, and the ECU will still recieve the signal, but should it fail (or not be there) the ECU won't care, and won't throw a code for it.
Im not sure what R130 is for. Some CA cars have it, some don't. I don't think it is of any kind of vital importance, but Id leave it be.

Thanks for the reply! The 1990 CA and Federal spec. GST seem to only have two differences, in that the CA spec. car has an EGR solenoid and an EGR gas temp. sensor, both of which are connected to the ECM. Perhaps installing R129 defeats those two inputs since they don't exist on the federal spec. car.

I'll give it a shot! Thanks again!

I'm in a similar situation, I have a CA car and want the ecu to be converted to a federal. (the ecu keps spiting out a egr error, even though mine is still in there). So i just solder the 1Kohm ressistor in R129? I'm a novice at soldering, I looked at the ecu cap replacement page and it kinda scared me. I don't want to f-up and be stuck without a car till i find a new ecu. How hard is the soldering for a novice?

Also and updates on if the cel showed up?

I ended up biting the bullet and found a non-CA spec. ECM on Ebay. Something about having the right ECM with the right part number put me a little more at ease. No more wondering if both ECM's are programmed the same and so on. The capacitor replacement is a must if your ECM still has the original caps..
Why do you want to convert your CA spec. car to federal spec.? Both cars have an EGR valve, but the CA car has the EGR temp. sensor and the EGR valve control solenoid. Swapping or converting over to the Federal spec. ECM won't resolve the CE light issue with the CA spec. EGR components.

based on this

basically the resistor on 129 tells the ECU to ignore the EGR TEMP signal. AFAIK the EGR valve will still function, and the ECU will still recieve the signal, but should it fail (or not be there) the ECU won't care, and won't throw a code for it.
I'm getting the EGR error because some part of the system is malfunctioning. I don't want to spend the money to fix a egr system that i would rather not have in the first place. I think it would be easier/cheaper to put in a resistor and block-off plate than paying for whatever part of the egr is not working right. Does this make sense?
