Are there any VFAQS out there for installing a walbro fuel pump into a 1g FWD? The link to the vfaq on VFAQ.com is broken or the page doesn't exist anymore. The reason I'm asking though is because I recently bought a 92 TSI FWD and the guy I bought it off of claims it has a walbro 255 installed. However, when the car is running I can't hear that signature "whine" that the fuel pump is known for. From what I read it's supposedly pretty audible and I can't hear anything at all. So, I want to pull the fuel pump out and check for myself. Any ideas?

I installed my 255hp on Sunday in my 90 AWD and I thought the Vfaq made it seem much harder that it actually was. The fitting that they say is such a pain wasn't bad at all, just a little tight. Go for it, take your time and its not hard at all.

I have to agree with mx_obe. I was dreading doing mine but it was almost cake. I'm sure some are a bitch but mine wasn't really a problem. I've done FWD and AWD and it's no big deal either way if you know what you're doing or at least have a general idea. Dive in give it a shot and good luck.

Word of advice, if you're finding that you don't have enough room to work behind the tank, loosen the bolts on the tank support straps to lower the tank some. Every little bit helps.

Oh yeah, and don't even try it without flare-nut wrenches or you're asking for stripped out useless fittings. ;)

Good luck, FWD fuel pumps are fun. Have your drain pan handy...

All this talk plus what I have heard from others is not making me feel the best on this. I am getting ready soon to take out my 255 and put a 190 in.. Damn you FWD's !! ;)

Why would you take the 255 out? If you plan on making any decent power you will outflow the 190, why not get an AFPR and do it right?

Yeah, I am not to excited for this. As I bought the car it has a 255 with the rewire.. Well to say the least she is a little rich. I'm lucky to get 200 miles off a full tank of gas with just driving to and from work. I think it will be worth the trouble to replace this in order to get some some-what decent gas mileage.

BTW: Anyone want to trade a 255 for a 190? :)

Well for what I have planned the 190 will be just fine. I dont plan on going crazy with this one.. yet.. As it sits right now is perfectly fine. Just had a baby couple months ago and the extra cash is now left the car and goes in that direction. So you can understand on how the amount of gas I go threw is just insane and very expensive.

I didn't even read that you were removing a rewired 255 to install a 190. Honestly I'd just get an AFPR and call it done. You may be able to get it done with just the 190, but the AFPR is a very nice tuning tool to have at your disposal... and there's no sense in busting your ass just to downgrade the fuel pump.

JMO. ;)

Well if I get a AFPR then I have to buy the install kit for it also? If so, Thats 150 for the FPR and another almost 100 bucks for the install kit vs 110 bucks for the 190. I'm not argueing the point I am just looking for choices here.

Thanks for any input guys. :)

You could buy a bolt on from either Bushcur or Switzer or go with Full Throttle's style on rail AFPR and not deal with a remote install. Honestly it is going to be a head ache pulling the pump and to switch in a smaller pump it just doesn't make sense. Let alone I would suggest an AFPR for the 190 as well...it can overflow the stock FPR as well.

I would also like to testify how much of a pain it is to do the fuel pump on a 1g FWD!!!

My fittings were so rusted that I had to resort to cutting the rubber hose and using a barb fitting to reconnect it. I also had over half a tank of gas when I did it, since the Haynes manual did not mention a certain bolt had to be removed  .

Like previously mentioned, it's not worth the trouble just to downgrade your fuel pump.
