Hi guys.

I just recently put a JDM engine in my 2gen eclipse, all went well, purrs like a kitten.

Only problem is, the fluttering when i accelerate. Sometimes it does it and sometimes it does not. Even when i'm in fifth gear, and i give it some gas it flutters and shakes the entire car.

I ordered a new BOV by Forge to replace the stock hoping that would fix it.
It did help slightly but the problem is still there.
The turbo is brand new so that is out of the question.

I had this problem with my previous 7-bolt engine as well, but it wasn't as bad as this.
I have NGK spark plugs and wires. I plan on getting a new air filter soon from my local autostore because the car sat for a while when my engine was being put in so it may have collected dust/dirt.

Also when i get a little heavy on the accelerator, i can smell something like gas or something, like the car is running rich because i'm not getting that good of gas mileage as i use to.

I'm thinking it could be a boost leak or my knock/o2 and whichever else sensor that usualy gets replaced since they are all stock sensors, and the car has 130K miles on it, so what do you guys think?

Replace the sensors/pcv valve?

Can you explain this "fluttering" a little more? If it's shaking the entire car, check your BS shaft timing, it's only under load, right? Just a guess, I don't know, if he doesn't happen all the time then its hard to say, and prolly isn't what I'm thinking. I had one shaft not spinning, and a dead pistons, I had exactly what your talking about x5, not sure if it was the 3 pistons, or the broken BS belt, or a combination of all that and bent valves, but who knows. I think I was on the 3 pistons for awhile, so it could be along the same lines as what I was experiencing If the shafts aren't timed in synch, instead of canceling out certain vibrations, they're just cause more at certain RPM's.

I'll try and explain this fluttering a bit better.

Yes it is only when under load.
When you press the accelerator, i can hear the BOV working, but it sounds liek it's taking in to much air. The car keeps speeding up when accelerating, but it has a slight pull/pop/sputter/bog which makes you accelerate slowly.

It almost feels/sounds like the car is misfiring.

Also, not litterally shaking the car, just that when the engine does fluster, it makes it feel like the engine is shaking the car, it's just due to the sputtering when accelerating.

The spark plugs i have in there are over a year old, so i am replcing them with some news this week, i'll also be changing the pcv valve. I'm holding back on buying the knock sensor and throttle body sensor until i get some input fromy ou guys, since those two parts don't come cheap.

I really am confused as to whats the problem.

How do i go about fixing the runnign rich?

No mods are done to this car.

I'm thinking i'm running rich due to smelling gas fumes when accelerating.
So guess i would ask this, how do i stop running rich so i can stop smelling it?

Edit: I have not pressure tested for boost leaks because i keep leaning towards running rich which i think is causing me these problems.

Yeh, this isn't what I was thinking, different kind of "flutter".

As far as running rich, there's too many possibilities to get into, just do a quick search for "running rich" and you'll find lot's of answers.

I fixed the fluttering/hit brick wall problem!

I gap on my spark plugs were wrong. They were at .50 and they should be at .28-.30.
Amazing!

But, I'm still running rich, so any more advice on that would be nice. Like where to start looking ect.

Thanks!

I concur on the boost leak.

If its still rich, what are you running for pump, injectors, pressure regulator, mass airflow sensor? Also what are you running for fuel control? (Eg, SAFC, MAFT, DSMLink etc)

Good job on fixing the fluttering. Now do that dam Boost leak test we are all talking about it add's power like a mod but it's free :D .
