Hey guys, My friend has a 97 GSX with a S16G turbo, stock sidemount, 565cc injectors, 3000GT fuel pump, thermal 3inch exhaust. That week his car was like misfiring or like breaking up. So i said lets pull the plugs. So as I was changing them I took out his cylinder #3 spark plug...and the tip was completley melted. So the misfire made sense because cylinder #3 was getting insufficient spark. Now to the question: Do you think there's anything wrong with his motor from a melted spark plug? I have heard of somebody melting a spark plug, then the car turned out to be ok. I am borrowing my friends compression and leak down tester to see exactly where his engine stands. Since then we have installed a S-AFC and a Walbro 255lph fuel pump, so no more detonation for him. Also, That 3000GT pump is garbage!

Any help would be appreciated!

The compression test and a leak down test will tell you pretty much everything you need to know. Lets hope it didn't screw up a ring, valve or anything like that.

The 3000GT VR4 pump is usually enought for a 16G with 550s but who knows how old or how well that one was installed.

How much boost was your friend running when he melted the plug?
How was he tuning the car if he didn't have an SAFC before?

I just don't like the pump. The only reason why there wasn't a tuning device on the car is because the previous owner told us that the car had a Walbro 255lph pump and 565cc injectors. Besides the point, the car might have a Voltage issue that we don't know about. All the problems are fixed for fuel/tuning wise, the car now has a 255lph and an S-afc. If the car does have a voltage issue, I can just hardwire the pump. I wanted input on what you guys thought about the engine and the melted spark plug situation.

thanks!

That cylinder ran lean and detonated. Not surprising at all with a poor tune, questionable fuel pump, S16G turbo with no FMIC at 20psi. All you need is a bad tank of gas. What octane fuel was he running? Rings are probably toast in that cylinder.

93 Octane all the time. Well it's a 50/50 chance that something happend. Inferences can't be made until I do a leak down test. What I am not understanding though is why is it just cylinder #3? Why didn't #1 and #3 have melted plugs?

Thanks for the input guys

I swear, people just kill me with this stuff. I'm just gonna double my horsepower, not tune it at all and see what happens and complain when something melts down. Good philosophy. Jebus man, at least buy an EGT gauge or something so you know when your close to death is all I'm saying. You get what you deserve if you don't plan and do things wrong or out of order as far as mods go.

What's the attitude for? It's not even my car, I am posting this on behalf of my friend's car as a favor for him. I simply posted for some opinions like people have been giving me, and I appreciate it. The reason why my friend thought he was ok is because the previous owner lied about two things. He said yeah the car has a Walbro 255lph fuel pump and 550cc injectors. So he's like ok I'm probably pretty rich with all that fuel and only being at 16-17lbs of boost. So in the process of him saving up for an S-AFC he had some fun with the car racing and stuff. He had no clue what boost creep was or why it happend. But when he raced on the highway his car creeped at night to like 20lbs of boost. Then one day when I changed the spark plugs for him, #3 was melted. So immediatley I was like alright time to check this car out thoroughly. He bought an S-AFC and I took his fuel pump assembly out. We later find out that it is a 3000GT Pump and that car has factory 450cc injectors. So then he buys a pump and injectors, they are both on the car now. The car is in the process of getting a new clutch/flywheel so it's not on the road. I will give you guys an update on the car's condition when I do a leak down test.

Thank you for your input
