Alright so I've finally begun the work on my new 92 talon tsi awd. We knew the timing belt had worn out and the car had jumped timing. (This is how I talked the guy down 1500 bucks), However, we didn't think the valves were bent because before we realized the belt was bad the guy tried starting the car and it at least tried to turn over.(correct me if I'm wrong but cars won't turn over if valves are bent). Anyways now I've come to the point where everythings taken apart and I need to replace the timing belt. We've discovered alot of play in the front balance shaft. Now is this a serious problem? Can I just order the eliminator kit install it all up and go? Or might I have more serious problems. The B/S belt was torn to shreds however it didn't cause the timing belt to go bad as far as I know. I guess what I'm asking is how serious of a problem is this to fix.

Sorry forgot to add. Do you have to remove both balance shafts or just the front one. Searching has left me a little confused because I've seen stuff about removing both and stuff about just removing the front. If you do have to remove both does the balance shaft eliminator kit include everything? Or do you have to buy two? Sorry for being such a newbie

It's possible that the front balance shaft bearing is shot. That could lead to the shaft grinding on the block if it ran for long enough. From what i understand, the front bearing/shaft is the most difficult one to access and you'll probably have to take out the engine.

If it is shot I can't take it out and rotate it like they say to do to block the oil off right? That is if I did the eliminator kit. Which since I have to do something is a great likelihood.

The car will ussually still turn over even if the valves are bent, ussually it will leave the rocker arms laying all over the place but it will still turn over.

Chances are some valves are bent, your not out anything to put on the new belt hoping for the best and then just do a compression check after you get the new belt on but I wouldnt get your hopes too high :(

you can eliminate the balance shafts completely for $49 in Parts from the dealer. You MUST remove both, otherwise it will SHAKE badly... I had the timimg belt changed in my truck and the idiot that did it didn't get the Oil Pump Side Shaft timed correctly and boy was it bad..... anyway, here;s a link to a very good writeup on the procedure with part numbers that I used. I did it with the engine out of the Truck BTW.
