i am out of ideas. i have replaced this damn belt 3 times in 2 days to try to get one to fit right....they fit fine...tension is fine but it still squeels...i have wire brushed all of the pulleys. tensioned it about 20 different times at different strenghts....all pulleys are aligned cause i just put on my timing belt and water pump so i know for sure i put it on right and i double checked. all 3 belts look like they are wearing on the outside of the belt by the top rib....but what ould make it do that....the pulleys are very shiny like something has been rubbing across them i just dont know what to do...im even considering dropping my pride and joy off at "the devils palace" but i dont want to...anyone had this problem or any suggestions!

im having the exact same problem and i was starting to wonder if it was the alternator belt or somehting else because ive done the same thing, and my squeeling only seems to happen when the car is cold, after i drive it for about 10 minutes it goes away...help me too! :)

It sounds like your alternator may be going out. Mine would squeal when I first started it, as it overworked trying to charge the battery. You should try replacing the alternator :D

First thing you should check is the harmonic balancer when you get belts like these, that are tight and still squeal. If it comes apart, it is bad news. If the dampener is fine then try sprinkling so ajax onto the grooves with the car running. It was suggested a while back when we still had the digest email thing going. I have had to sprinkle them once or twice in the years I have had mine because that anti squeel stuff just never worked.

well i talked to a guy about this and i have an unordhodox pulley thats aluminum...he says with the belt squeeling theres a good chance that the grooves in it are pretty much polished....he said take it off and sandblast the grooves only to ruffen up the surface. then put the belt back on and see what it does...if that doesnt stop it...its prolly a good idea to replace the alternator and water pump pulleys

I am going through the same problem right now. It just started getting cold up in CT and in the morning or after my car sits for a while it squeals like a bitch. I've tried changing the belts like 6 times now, put in a new alternator, and have sprayed anti squeal on it. Nothing seems to work. I have even taken it to a shop and they say they fixed it but the next day it will squeal, I have pretty much given up on fixing it, but it is so embarassing. Can someone help us squealing belt guys out.

I too replaced my alternator, and it stopped. The only noise I get, is a tiny squeal occasionally when I turn on the ac, but it only lasts a second or two.

Edit: I just remembered, I have a friend with a 93 Talon DL, and Autozone gave him a belt 1/8" bigger than the normal belt. If you have to original belt, go take them up there and make sure its the right one. Otherwise, you could go to Satan and get them there. I wouldn't advise it.

I think more or less it acts as a detergent to get rid of any oil or grease on the pulleys. My belts squeal everytime I take off my timing belt and stuff because I think the grease on your hands gets all over the pulleys. It never hurt my belts or anything either. My old belts after 60k miles looked great but I changed them anyways.

well today i was driving and i had my system up really loud and everytime i would stop at a light or sign and then accelerate...it would squeel...but if i switched off my system there wouldnt be squeeling when i accelled...im thinkin it is probably the alternator. dont have money to replace now...still gonna try to sandblast the crank pulley...so we will see what happens

Did you even read any of the posts above, check your harmonic balancer/crank pulley for signs of separation.

this happened to me once. right after a Tbelt/water pump replacement. ended up that I put the outer pulley that goes on the waterpump on backwards. Something easy to double check.

It's funny, my RS always squeeled never could get it to stop tried everything. My new GSX doesn't squeel at all, even on very cold mornings, although here in Cali there isn't many cold mornings. I think by now I am use to the squeel, but it does get annoying when you first start it up at say the store parking lot and everyone looks at you cause it sounds like your car is f*ked up.

Honestly though, grab hold of the timing belt by placing your index finger under the belt and your thumb on top. Give it a few tugs. It should be pretty stiff. If it has too much slack then tighten it, it only takes a minute. If it works then it will save you from doing a lot of unnecessary work. Be careful not to overtighten though, otherwise you have a possibility of breaking the belt.

Good Luck!

I think i just fixed this problem I have a 91 eagle TSI and i thought the altenator was overheating, so i put the heatshields back on, didn't help, i thought it was belts, replaced them 3 times, didnt help, decided to stop being cheap and bought a reman altenator..... once i took the old altenator out, i found my problem, it churped when you spun it, and i think a bearing was messed up 2, its an easy fix if you have 100 dollars, hoped i helped
