**I also posted this in the newbie section, but I wanted to get some attention here too since the main question has to do with a manual trans**

let me start by introducing myself...
My name is Ryan, I've worked on 4G63's before but I am in no way an expert. I've helped my friend work on his Evo8 and I've lent a hand at the local rally shop which is currently working on a turbocharged AND supercharged Evo8 which will be putting out an estimated 600-700whp when it gets tuned. I've also done a 5-angle valve job and port and polish on a 1st gen Eclipse 4G63.
The car...
The car is a fully loaded(automatic) 1995 GSX with 60,000 miles on it. It was purchased used by my friend (same one with the Evo8) as a daily driver so he could keep his NSX tucked away in his garage(this was before the evo). It has recieved tender love and care including oil changes every 3000 miles and regular wheel rotations. It also just recieved its 60,000 miles checkup, so it has a new timing belt, plugs, wires, etc etc. He will be selling it for about $6000(your opinions?). It has never had any major problems (the usual crank walk or wheel bearing problems, etc).
So Im wondering this...I want to do a manual trans swap. If I were to get an evo3 engine and trans would it drop right in? Would it be worth the hassle of all of this work and money?

Personally, since you haven't bought the car I would just look for a MT. I mean it's very well possible, and not too big a deal, but unless you already put money into an AT, then I would just wait till the right one comes along. Also, just as refrence, I just got a 95 GSX with a few mods, for $4,500.

trust me I would much rather just get a m/t to start with, but apparently they're a lot harder to come by around here than I first thought. Other than this car I've only seen one other in the past 2 years. Im looking for a stock or virtually stock car, I dont want one that can already do the 1/4 in 11seconds. I want to build it myself.

desrtuckeclipse-how many miles were on your car when you got it? As far as mods what did it have? my friends car only has an intake and GReddy bov.

Anyone else have input?

Miles weren't really a concern with me, but it has just over 100k. It has quite a bit of mods to support the big16g in there now. It still only does 13.7 with no tuning, so I just use it as a fun daily driver untill I get the need to start serious work on it. I wanted something that had some work done, becasue I didn't want to start stock again. I hate stock.

Another thing, I would try and talk him down to 5.5 or soemthing, cause you'll have to get all the parts for the swap, thats atleast another 500 unless you know some people, and then you'll still have to spend a weekend doing it, assuming you have all the right tools.

Yeah, agreed on the price talk down. $6,000 is a pretty good bit -- I've seen a lot of GSXs and GS-Ts around here with 80-100,000 miles only on it for around $4500 to $5300. But yeah, as long as you have the money for the transmission and everything else you're going to need, and the effort, I say go for it.

And why haven't you gotten tuned des??

do any of you guys know of a site that has an auto to manual walkthrough? I've read/watched several auto to manual swap walkthroughs for 240sx's and Im sure they're very similar. But I dont want to miss anything. Plus it would help to have a list of stuff I'll need to begin with.

Here is a link on vfaq that talks about the swap on a 1G FWD.

This will give you some idea of what is involved. Remember that if you decide to do this you will also want to locate a M/T rear end. Also, I think the transfer case is different so you'll have to get your hands on one of those as well (double check this one to be sure though).

My name is Diego Lopez, you say you have worked on 4G63 engines. I have a 1999 eclipse GST, I replaced the valves on it, I would like to know if you know how to reset the timing on a 4G63 engine

Sorry Diego, but not off hand. I would have to look that up myself. The guy brought me the cylinder head already removed from the block. I disassembled it, performed the cuts on the brand new valves he had brought to me and the head, then port and polished it and gave it back to him to reassemble.

As far as getting a manual trans rear end, are the n/a and turbo rears the same? What about putting a 1st gen. rear into a second gen. housing? I know of a couple junkyards where I could probably find a rear, but it might be a 1st gen. manual.

And as far as worrying about getting proper flywheel bolts and a transfer case if everything goes my way I will be dropping in an evo3 engine and trans. Anything else I need I SHOULD be able to find fairly easy at the local junkyards.

N/a dsms are fwd. N/a 2g dsms dont even have the same engine or trans.

woops, sorry about that. That was a lack of brain activity on my part. Ok, so say I get an Evo3 front clip. I would have everything I need right there to do the m/t swap other than interior parts. And the only thing I would need after that would be the rear end, right?
