I'm finally back from Iraq and for the month of February, I'll be off work and under the hood of my car. I'm going to be rebuilding the motor and was wondering if any of the experts here have a plan they'd like to share with me or if anyone can point me in the right direction on parts. I'm gonna stay naturally aspirated (I'm too cheap) and bump the compression up and get some oversized valves installed. Anymore ideas or suggestions??? Thanks for all the help along the way!!!

Thanks CWLaser90, You've always been there for me. I've been checking IPP out for a while now. Hey, is there anything you've ever wanted to do to yours but haven't because it involved pulling it all the way down??? Let me know because that's where I'm headed ya know!!! I'm just curious, I'm a pretty good mechanic and all but I'm definately willing to experiment. I'm just not sure I covered all the bases. I wondering, is there another cam that's a little more aggresive that you've pondered but never tried??? Hit me back and let me know, I'm curious.

Thanks SVT Rob but remember, a 2000 dollar Eclipse will also need about 2000 dollars or better in basic maintenance and repairs. I like my little 1.8 and really need to focus on making it a little better. Thanks for the advice but I'd actually just like some advice on making the 1.8 a little better.

Most of the ones I see for 2000 need minor maintenance, oil change, tuneup, stuff like that. It's the 500-700 ones that need major maintenance. I know, I bought my fwd TSi for 350, put an engine in it for 800, then traded it for an awd + 500.

I just don't see spending the money to build an engine, when you could spend it on a stock turbo car, and have the same, if not more power, and more room to grow. But as long as you are happy with your car, that's all that really matters.

But the thing is, he asked for your opinion on what to do under the hood of his 1.8...not for a new 2.0 turbo. Yeah, he could buy a GSX, but then he'd be ready to pay comparatively more for insurance, repairs, GAS, etc. I've just heard the "sell your car and buy a 2.0" a thousand times. I know it's a great car, my friend has one, but this is the 1.8 forum remember ;)

I know it is. I told him the best thing to do with his 2000, too :) When you get older, your insurance drops. I only pay $85/mo for TWO awd turbo dsm's. Seems like it's a fair trade, to me.

Yeah but you're ancient, way too old to enjoy them... ;)

Nobody, but it just builds and builds and gets soo annoying. You don't think we've considered buying a 2.0? I know cw has one in addition to his 1.8, and many other people have both, but we've all considered it. So why tell us again?

They made the 1.8 forum for a reason. It was so this wouldn't happen. But alas! it does anyway. If you have anything pertaining to the 1.8, then speak. If it has something to to with buying/swapping in a 2.0, or a put-down to the 1.8, take it somewhere else please.

I wouldn't swap in a 2.0, that just sounds like a wiring nightmare come to life. Besides, I've owned a 1.8L, a 2.0L TSi fwd, and three 2.0L awd's. I'm much happier with the awd. It sticks the launch, corners well, and pulls really good on the highway.

I gave my opinion for a practical reason, I don't see spending performance money on a vehicle that's already outclassed by a stock turbo vehicle, even if you WERE to drop a buttload of money in it. But again, that's me, Mr. Practical. Why spend money building a 4cyl Mustang, when you can build a V8 for the same cost, and have twice the fun, and half the headache?

I already said, if he's happy, so be it, spend the money. Nowhere did I knock his car, or this forum.

I agree with you. 1.8-->2.0 swap is pretty dumb IMO.

But most of us aren't trying to make performance monsters out of our 1.8's. It makes the daily drive a little more fun. I understand your point, and I've heard it many, MANY times before. For those who are turbocharging their 1.8's, it sounds like a very fun project, and I'm still researching so that I might be able to do so. But not to RACE it, again, just to make the drive more enjoyable. Bottom line is, if it has anything to do with the 2.0, keep it out of this forum. That's all we ask.

I have just purchased a 99 Exploder for my daily. All the creature comforts and luxury I never can experience with the Talon. All leather interior, seats 5 comfortable, and still has room for more in the back. It's even slightly peppy with the 4.0L V6 and auto trans.
