Here's a great kill for all you classic muscle car lovers out there...
The first, and maybe one of the last kills of the new season for my SS(probably putting it up on the selling block in 2 months).
Took it out for the first time since last November...really nice day today.
Guy in town has a beautiful, clean, 1968 Hurst Olds 455, pretty much stock except for some decent tires/rims and a few minor tricks like hotter coil, reworked distributor, and a custom, mandrel bent stainless exhaust He pretty much putts around town with it in nice weather and that's about it, he's had it for years. These are *VERY* rare cars to say the least. They only made like 515 of em, and they are worth big bucks now.
We happen to meet up at the gas station across from his house, as I'm drooling over his car to my surprise he says, "you got a little time? Let's hit the highway and run em."
Well hell...I'm all over that like you wouldn't believe! Sly dog waited until I filled my tank up to say something, so I was at full weight. My SS is stock, auto trans. The Olds is auto trans too.
We headed out to the local highway, decided we'd catch a light first, and once we had a winner, we'd line back up at highway speed and try it from there.
Took a pass up and down the highway first to make sure no Troopers were hiding in the weeds anywhere, this is the time of year they come out in droves on this highway getting their Sunday double pay.
After a few times we finally catch a clear red light with no traffic to be seen. We both throw down a good burnout to clean the tires a bit.
Fuggin light took forever, but we finally got it, green light, bang and we're off.....we both leave the light dead even, I walk it out pretty good with a bit of spinning as I fed more gas and go WOT it hits second and barks the rears hard, He looked to be about a car or more behind, I could hear the big 455 roaring over my reasonably quiet LS1, but he was now fading back, I wound it to about 110 and I would guess he was at least 5+ cars back.
I was a bit surprised, I figured his minor mods would help even things out a bit, but to no avail.
I coast back down and we level off at about 70.
3 honks we hit it, the A4 tranny obliges with a nice hard downshift, I again hear the mighty 455 roaring and see his front end rise up a bit,
But all the commotion it was making didn't help, I walked away at a really good clip, wound it to about 120 and called it quits.
We catch a turnaround and try it from about a 25ish roll, I stomp it & the A4 drops hard into first...oops, I'm a bit sideways & he's pulling ahead, second hits, the tires bite and it's all over as I shoot past him.
Hell I was really hoping it'd be a bit more even, I really love those 442's.
