Hey,

Heres a question for ya. When is it time to upgrade the ignition? How much can the stock DSM ignition handle?? Is MSD a waist of $$$???

So far this is what I have: 16G, 550cc's, walbro, FMIC, profec B, 2G MAS. Do you guys think it's a waist of $$$ to go for the MSD? Or should I save my $$$ for a 20G or some webcams and AFC?
Thanks for the input!

i would say definitely get the S-AFC first!

I wish I had a waist of money. Right now it's just 32 inches of fat. Hookers have crotches of money, though.

Unless your running faster than low 11's you don't need the MSD ignition, the stock one is fine. Yes, its a waste of money. Save for a VPC, my choice.

Thanks, that was bassically what I was looking to find out. The only reason i ask is that when I spool up sometimes the car stutters (not a boost spike) so I thought maybe it was time to upgrade the ignition.

if your car stutters you should probably replace the spark plug wires with some magnecor 8.5mm's, I read that the stock spark plug wires have been known to go early on dsm's. My colt does the same thing but I don't wanna spend any money on it :- D

Not trying to be a jerk about it, but I've also heard some things about nology wires, especially from the Endyn board

"Aside from the problems mentioned above...the Nology "Hot Wires" are proven to make less power in damned near every application we've ever tested them in. While a "hot" spark is desirable, a short duration spark (like theNology's) isn't. Get some 8.5 mm Magnecors and can the Nology stuff. Don't degrade the performance of the MSD with the Nology wires."

.....The Old One.....

And a bunch of other people on the board have had something to say about how crappy they are.

mafiman,

Don't worry your not being a jerk. :D Thats why I posted this here for some real input! I have them on my NT DSM also and never had a problem with them.
Thanks

I was thinking that it had something to do with spark. Because w/ the 550cc injectors and the Walbro fuel pump it's running rich as hell. I may be dumping too much gas in the cylinders and it's bogging out. But, it doesn't happen all the time :( I guess the best thing to do woud be to get the Apexi AFC then go from there.

I'd get the AFC... I'm actually impressed the car idles fine without the AFC and having the 550's and walbro pump.

Lipster,

It's not a problem at idle. But, heres what I'm thinking; I probably need to get the AFC to correct the stuppering problem. And besides I plan on getting the Webcams in the future, and I assume I will need the AFC to properly run the cams. Or shoud I just ditcth cams and get a 20G??????

I'd do the 20G and AFC.

How bad is the stutter? Nothing like fuel cut? Do you have the 255 walbro? If so, I can definitely see it bogging down... some guys tune down the fuel mix with their afc 10%, 20% or more. Maybe your plugs are carbon fouling? Try checking them...

Definitely definitely break down and get an AFC then. You'll definitely benefit from one now and maybe even more if you get a 20G or other mods.

Do you have an EGT gauge to tune against? Maybe even take it somewhere and run on a dyno and tune...

yea like i said, definitely get the AFC. i am running rich as hell with my walbro 255, i cant imagine having the walbro AND 550's without an AFC.

AFC all the way

Dude, you will be surprised how quick your car will move after you lean it out a little. I am sure it will rank very high on your best mods list. Tune safe with an EGT guage.

BTW, everyone says magnecore 8.5mm. I bought my car with magnecore 2.5mm, WTF. That doesn't sound right does it? They look big like 8.5 mm assuming that the 8.5mm is an external measurement. What da u guys think?

ummmmmm........

How do you use the EGT to tune the AFC?? Does the exhaust gas temp. increase when the A/F mixture in more lean?? Sorry if this is a stupid question,
but I gotta ask ;)

Studdering/AFC

Yes your EGTs are higher the leaner you go. The limit is 1650°F (correct me if I'm wrong) or else melted metal.

I have a intermittent stuttering problem as well and don't think it spark related. I was thinking it could be either bogging from a rich condition (perhaps leaking injector) or my stock clutch is giving up the ghost! Funny it seems it started to really become a problem when I put in the 3" cat-back, 2.5" DP w/ test pipe, and up'ed the boost to 18psi. I don't have an AFC either but would like to get one soon.
