Hello, I am currently trying to paint my front bumper of my black eclipse. Is it necessary to purchase the paint matched to the color code of mitsubishi kalapalana black in order for it to match the rest of my car?? Or can I just purchase standard jet black gloss to paint it?? I cant see how black would differ in color or shade?? And yes im going to primer and clear coat as well. Anyone please respond with their opinion.

For example..

Mitsubishi Paint codes for Black:
X13,X15,X21,PX1,PX2,PX8,EB0,DX8,99 = All exact same mixing formula for Black.

X85,AC10085 = Mitsu. codes for Flat Black (both same formula)

Personally, If all you need is a pint of paint, just go to a body shop that has their own mixing bank and buy it from them. Or go to the people they buy their toners from.

Where I am, There are 3 different auto supply stores that will mix paint for whoever walks throuh the door and asks for it.

At least if you buy it locally, if you have questions about reducers, activators, flash times, or whatever. You can pick up the phone and ask the guy that mixed it for you.
As opposed to being on your own trying to figure out exactly how to mix an 8-1-2 formula and not knowing what to add next.

Don't waste the dealers time. Just look on your cars ID Plate. The paint code is right there.

match the codes! we painted my old hood and didnt match the color (matched it as close as we could, but not exactly, and you could tell the difference. hope you have a nice gun and good place to paint, good luck!

pats95gst was your car black though? Thanks flamed, im going to do some driving around today and see what I can find. Ive been looking only for auto paint shops I never thought about just going to a bodyshop and seeing what they can do for me. The color code is x13 and I was actually going to purchase the match from www.paintscratch.com but they only offered the paint and clear coat, no hardener and reducer? And yes I have a HVLP gun and a nice compressor im all ready to go.

The link didnt work in the first post, this was my original choice.

Different shades of black paint will not look the same under a light source. It will be most noticable in sunlight. Get the right code.

Unfortunately, Even if you go with the original paint code of X13, you are probably going to have slight matching issues. The paint that is on your surrounding panels has been exposed to years of sunlight, road grime, oxidation, etc. If you REALLY want it to look right you will have to blend into the adjacent panels. You can't butt brand new paint up against 10yr old paint and expect it to match perfectly.

FYI:If you happen to go to a Shop that deals in DuPont paints. The DuPont stock number for X13 is 99,F0222,F0221. All the same color.

oooh thats right I never thought of that. Flamed I wrote all the info down that youve given me, thanks again.

o and 1320 thats definitely true I nebver thought of that either always staring at my car in the garage.

I am a autobody tech/. as long as you get the color mixed to the factory code it will be fine, then it will be up to the air press out of the gun and how much you reduce the paint it will be a diffrent color shade of black. What I do to color match anyting is to mix it all up and spray test panels on clear plastic film. After is flashed you can take it out side in the sun to see how close it is to the color of the car . Just keep it going till you get it as close as you want it.
