Hello,

I let a local garage change my clutch last week.
They said that they had a problem with one bolt.
They put it back together without the bolt.
It is the bolt under the starter that bolts through to the bell housing.

Click on this link:

The picture is from VFAQ and this is the bolt that the garage left out.

Will it cause any problems?

They told me to becareful and not to race her too hard.

Any suggestions??

(I know, go to another garage next time).

Well I dont know if it will cause you problems or not. I would get it replaced just to be safe.

Go to a junk yard or a pick a part and get that bolt from there and see if it goes in smooth. I bet that you could go to Mitsu Dealer and get one or it might be just a common bolt. I would just take care of it

Also, you might want to find out soon if it was the shop the screwed it up. If you can prove it, they have to fix that. Hope this helped some

There are the bolts, looks like 2099Q

And we put it back together without one bolt is inexcusable. yea we did an oil change but wehad a problem with your filter so we left it off. don't drive it to hard..... jebis. at least they admitted it.

Ask them why it was a problem. is it stripped? did they break a bolt?

DSM's and shops don't mix.

its a painful lesson to learn. it took me 6months of agravation on my 1st dsm when i had a timing belt go.

The clutch will probably slip, like posted above ask why the bolt wouldn't go in and hold them to it.
the clutch wont slip.....its just another bellhousing bolt. it's the bottum one that goes throught the firewall side dowel pin. this bolt could cause you to crack the bellhousing.

I'd have to agree with this because these are the stories I've heard. One of my friends said he drove his for about a week and then one day it wouldn't go in gear. He popped the hood and the tranny was sitting at an odd position because they didn't put in all the dowel pins and bolts. Came to find out the bellhousing was cracked because of the shops negligence.

The car I bought to get back into DSMs a month ago had...

the rear bolt (the one in question in this thread) missing, the next one on top missing, the other one on top loose, and the front one tight. He said "it's hard to get it into gear".....

turns out rear bolt and first top bolt were stripped bell housing was cracked at 2nd top bolt.

public service anouncement: use a freakin torque wrench if you must.

Hello,
thanks very much for all your advice.

I wonder if the hole could be tapped out?

Maybe I should do the darn work myself.!!

-redrs92
did you get a bolt in there? is it stripped?

I have not worked on it.
The garage guy said that the hole maybe striped.
They are blaming the guy who rebuilt my engine.
But the bolt was there and ok before he changed the clutch.

I am frustrated.

Can anyone tell me if I drop the transfer case if I can see this darn bolt?

I hate to unbolt the whole transmission.

yes if you drop the Tcase you'll find this bolt.

I had the trans half bolted up when i found this stripped out bolt so i just dropped it out again, drilled out the hole in the block for a 10mm bolt and had Jon at TRE drill and tap the transcase.

There and "ok" is kind of vague, if the engine builder did infact strip the bolt out they could have only half torqued it, leaving it there unless you know for a fact they had to actually apply force to loosen it you dont know if it was "there and ok". so the shop may not be guilty of screwing your car up, but is still guilty of shady shit.

This bolt, if left off, will screw up your clutch disc aswell. You wont be able to push the clutch in after about 50 miles. I had one break off in the tranny and I had to drill it out and then I heli-coiled it to be safe. I had to take the trans off to fix it. Make sure the top says 10 on it. The 7's are weaker (but easier to drill) no 4's... Its up to you. M8x1.25 thread maybe 60 - 65 mm long. You have to have this bolt installed. If left off it WILL screw something up...

Some of those bolts are different lengths and have to be put in certain positions in order to not interfer with other moving parts. THey probably stuck in the wrong bolt in the wrong hole and figured it was screwed. Pull them one by one, check against the above diagram. If that one is crossthreaded or bad redrill it and tap it. You have to have all the bolts there to keep from cracking that bell housing especially on these cars.

I found a guy who works on these types of cars.
He drilled out the hole and fixed it.
It now has all the bolts.
He said that he last garage did terrible work.
They did not have all the bolts in the transfer case either.

I guess that I have really learnt a lesson.

When you own a DSM, don't just let anyone / or any garage work on it.

thanks guys for all your help and comments.
