well is 92 a must ? with no mods especialy no upgraded turbo ?

gas is fuckin expensive here

so far i been switching from 92 to regular a few times is that a bad idea ?

Uhh...Always use premium!!

In my area, we have 93 octane, and when I see Speedway POS 92 octane, I stay far away! I only buy Shell Vpower 93 and BP Amoco Platinum? 93..Amoco and shell I heard are the best for 93...

Anythiing under that, and you will be suffering from harsh knock...Jeez, read the FUCKIN OWNERS MANUAL...I think its even written on the Mirrors!

wierd for the first 2 weeks of having this dsm i been feeling up with regular and then i tryed 93 a few times from shell and i didnt notice anything at all

Mine says it a couple places... I think on the gas gauge... when you open the gas door... "ALWAYS USE PREMIUM" I go with Mobil...

If you're bitching about gas and the money you'll spend on just that... a DSM is definitely not for you.

actually in my owners manual it says you can use 87 but 93 will give better performance. I always use 93 because I have higher than stock boost. ANYWAY, knock is when your air/fuel mixture ignites early and it results in broken internals, it's called knock because it makes a knock or pinging sound (or so I've heard). 93 octane is more resistant to knock which is why you should use it.

oh but yet it says i can use 87 like my car aint modefield for shit i dont care aobut the engine in it now... but i do want it to last but paying 10$ extra every time i fill up can pay for a new engine thats y i duno if i hsould bother wasting ym money on an engine with 190Ks

IDK, I guess you could use 87 as long as you don't step on it too often, but If you race your car just pay for the 93. also if you don't see a performance increase after using 92 or 93 octane burn all your 87 put 92, reset the ecu and then take it for a spirited test drive and you will feel the difference because the ecu was used to 87

k k

and by the way mr2 isnt a DSM :p

Usually the price difference between 87 and 93 is 30-60 cents/gal. When I run it to empty then fill, it's usually between 12-13 gallons... so... going on the high end ($.60/gal difference, 13 gal.)it's $7.80 more. on the lower difference ($.30 more/gal. 13 gal) you're looking at an extra $3.90 as opposed to 87. If you don't think an extra 8 bucks (tops) is worth it, or if you're too cheap to do it... that's your choice. I dunno. I look at it as simple preventative maintenance/upkeep. If you're using it as a daily driver where you're tacking on a shitload of miles... well, I probably wouldn't be looking to modify it either.

k wtf is a knock wat r u guys talkin about gas is gas y would it distroy anything

First of all please type so we can understand what the hell your trying to say. Second use premium only and it seems like you have alot of learning/searching ahead of you. If your complaining about gas then like someone said before a DSM is not right for you.

34$ is the most i've ever spent on filling up my tank....and i have a shitty job. thats 68 every two weeks. 300+ every two weeks pay.....i can afford it....if you can't....get a better job.

If money is a problem then ditch your car and buy a bike or invest in some damn good shoes.

never use 87...

y do i keep geting diffrent responces one guy says the manual say i can use 87 fine the rest of u say dont ( i woiuld undersatnd if i had an upgraded turbo that acutualy needs good fuel ) i drive in economy mode all the time wats the point to have high octane

It doesn't matter if you're not running an upgraded turbo. Even for the 14b it recommends using PREMIUM.
It's been explained why premium is a better choice, you want examples? My friend had a 1g with the stock turbo. He ran premium in it 99% of the time. He filled up with 87 one day and his check engine light came on. When that tank ran empty, he filled back up with premium... the light went away. Jesus, man. I said it before, if the couple extra bucks at the pump is hurting you, sell your DSM. Shit, I'll buy it, my girlfriend needs a beater. The extra cash on gas is gonna be the least of your expenses.

ANother thing I noticed, when I moved to NY all the gas was 10% Ethanol. When I filled up, my CEL went on... came back to PA (no ethanol) filled up, light is off.
The point of using a high octane fuel is basically preventative maintenance. If you want to wear down your engine even faster, go ahead, keep putting 87 in. We'll be looking for your "My CEL keeps coming on and my car is running like shit" thread to pop up soon. Don't expect help.
