I purchased a 97 TSi FWD ATX with a loud knock to either fix or swap a 6 bolt into. I figured it was a spun bearing and when I pulled the pan I'd find a ton of bearing shavings. However it turned out the pan was absolutely clean. Also, when I pulled the valve cover the valves seamed relatively straight from what is visible at that view.

Now, I can't figure out if I should pull the head and check for piston slap because I figured if it is that I'd see metal shavings in the pan.

Other notes:
-Oil was disgusting brown
-Timing lines on camshafts line up, line on crank is not visible

Would the nasty oil create a huge knock?
Would a blown headgasket make it more audible?

Should I pull the head and take a looky?

Have a 3kGT VR-4 so I know Mitsu's, but new to the DSM world.

Thanks.
Garrett

The only way you can tell they are bent, from looking at it like that, is if any of the rockers are knocked off the valves. And sometimes they can be bent without knocking the rockers off.

Old oil that is broken down and thin will only make the situation worse and the knock more audible.

No

I think you should pull your mains and caps before you pull the head.

Don't forget to check your timing components to make sure something isn't knocking around on the side. I'd say also check you balance shafts. Those love to spin and ruin motors.

How loud and where is the knock coming from?

Loud knock = rebuild.
Even if you find the actual problem to be trivial... brown oil and loud noises mean that there will be other problems waiting to pop up. Besides, you just bought a broken car with unknown history. Just rebuild / replace the engine and be done with it.

If you have the pan off, check your rod cap end play as well as your crank end play. Enough people have had these problems with 7-bolts.

If you find anything even remotely questionable, i would pull the motor. Boost asks alot of internal engine parts, and theres no need to fix the thing twice!

what you are seeing is the ring gear on the torq converter. IF it makes a difference in neutral and park, it is very possible that you have a cracked flexplate, or loose flexplate bolts, or loose torque converter bolts, you need mechanics stethascope.

what should be covering this? currently there is nothing. Im thinking maybe something got in there and is causing all the racket.

Noise is EXTREMELY loud.

Ive heard lifter tick on my 3000gt this is not a tick, deffinetly a loud knock.

there is nothing in there, i always run without the dust shield for cooling perpouses . If the noise is comming from that area it is a loose bolt or broken flex plate.
what is the best way to go about removing the head? I was told by a local dsm'er it could be piston slap judging by how loud it was.

you aren't listening to me. piston slap isn't that loud, you had the pan off, so you should be able to diagnose an issue with a large ammount of piston slap. You need to diagnose the problem before pulling it apart. The only thing in that area that would make that loud of slapping sound would be maybe a loose wrist pin.
