i have never heard of that, so a block heater ... heats your block i suppose? how does it work? heated blanket?
BWAHAHAH!!!!

I *wish* I didnt know what a block heater was.
It plugs into where a freeze plug ussually is and keeps the coolant/block warm.
Some are magnetic, therefore they heat whatever they touch.

Nice. Would you reccomend that for anyone in cold climate?? During the winters here its like teens and 20's and 30's. Would a block heater help?? How expensive??

Well they're made for people living in a cold climate. I personally have had one on every car I've owned but never used it due to being poor and not wanting to pay for the electricity. Everyone up here has one. Everyone. They only cost like 50 bucks and they keep you car from hardstarting so I'd say its worth it. Especially since it helps out your battery by keeping things warmed down there. If theres one thing I've learned about car batteries, its that they hate cold weather. Stupid batteries.
Yes they help alot. Its routinely negative temps in s.d. We've had 90 degree weather and a snowstorm in the same week. Sorry thats off subject.

My car never had problems getting started without it but it was nice as it was blowing hot air within a minute instead of having to go outside, start it, and then go back inside to let it idle for 10 minutes so I wouldn't freeze my a$$ off. ;)

I work as a diesel mechanic at a trucking company in Michigan where its cold. As far as leaving it plugged in, it won't hurt anything except your electrical bill. But if you don't unplug it BEFORE you start the car you run the risk of damaging the heater as the moving water doesn't keep the element cool. We run 1,500 Watt heaters on our spare trucks for weeks just in case we need them, and no ill effects. Hope that answers your question.
