ok, well let me know ASAP if i can get them. Just a few quick questions about it.

1) Do you use the same subframe bushings as you would with a stock subframe?

2) what kind of steering rack is that?

3) is it pretty straight forward for installation?

Let me know asap man, i would kill for that setup.
1) No

2) Its a Flaming River Omni manual rear steer rack. It was cheaper than buying a used DSM rack and lighter. Plus it was brand new.

3) I couldn't say. I don't wrench much, just a driver and a tuner. I would say if you can change brakes, rotors, struts, etc you should be able to do it.

That makes no sense. Or do you drag- and/or road-race on tracks with pot-holes?

Well where I live there aren't gaping potholes. I guess I am just lucky and don't have to think about that much.

When all is said and done with fabrication, I will post some better pics. Everything is double shear. FK 5/8" moly rod ends are being used. Could have gone 1/2" but stronger is better. The minimum load rating is 9713lbs and goes up to around 15,500lbs.

These are only intended to be used off road. If they are used on the street, it would be absolutely at your own risk. Basically it would be stated something like this...

Due to the intended use of these products in racing, we make no warranties, either expressed or implied, including any warranty of merchantability of or fitness for a particular purpose. There is no warranty expressed or implied as to whether the goods used hereby will protect the ultimate user of such goods from injury or death. Racing is a dangerous activity, the user shall determine the suitability and safety of the product for it's intended use and, once installed, the user must assume all responsibility and risk arising from malfunction, damage, or misuse.

I am a consultant and bill rates that will probably make this look like non-profit work to put it bluntly. I don't even own a DSM so I am doing this more or less to hopefully help some enthusiasts out and give the fabricator some business he probably doesn't even need. I am trying to put myself in your shoes as though I still do have a DSM. I also like learning about everything I possibly can, meeting new people, and networking. The last thing I want happening is trying to help a bunch of people out with a need and then turn around and get sued or give myself a bad rep.

I hear you. Good reply. The issue that I was most worried about was a pot-hole or some such at highway speed. This would send an impact through the lower front control arms that is orders of magnitude higher than anything ever experienced on a track. And it's impacts (not force) that usually breaks things. I would not want anyone killed on the way to the Shootout, for example.

Now, how about a tubular replacement for the compression arm on a 2G?

Yeah, I wouldn't want to see anyone not make the shootout as well...or get killed for that matter either!

I am hoping at some point we can help out the 2G enthusiasts as well. I started my DSM life back in 96' with a factory exec 95 GST and raced it when Brent Rau was just getting into the 12's at the local track so my roots are deep and so is my loyalty to DSM's in general. I have had a 2G, 3000GT VR4, 1G and now the EVO. I should have owned a Galant VR4 too but the kid backed out on me :(

We met with the fabricator and will be selling these as a kit. The kit will consist of the tubular k-member, tubular control arms, and motor mounts. It will be designed for the stock steering rack, and exhaust on the car. The first design will not incorporate a front sway bar and will be designed for drag racing only and handle cars in excess of 1,000 hp. It will save 50 - 55 lbs (quite a bit of it being unsprung weight) and stiffen things up significantly in the front. The selling price is going to be $1,199 and they should be available within 2 - 3 months. If anyone is interested, PM me with your email address and I will let you know when they are available. We will possibly also be doing something that is geared toward auto-x and solo in the future.

Well progress on the car has been much slower than expected. We did however get one of our team mates street cars in this week finally and are working on a k member with the stock steering rack. Our fabricator has been beyond swamped.

Here are some more pictures for those that are interested in checking out a 1G with a full rear tube frame, moser 4 link rear end and some more pics of the custom K member up front.

Its about time you got the car done Shamus! You going to make it to the shootout?
Hi Jake...this is actually Trevor. Shamus is still working on his forums skills so I do all the posting. He won't have it done in time for the shootout though. How are the cars coming along for Tim and Vasil? How about yours?

I should have also mentioned the car is running a custom spool and not a locker rear end. It is the only other one besides Shep's in an AWD that I know of.

Our cars will not be ready for the shootout either... Too much last minute shit.

Are you guys still going? I think we are still planning on it.
Bummer on the cars...I will be going and taking my EVO. Not sure on Shamus but I think he plans on going also.

Shamus weighed his car tonight...it is missing a few things still like the fuel cell, front mount, and piping. However, it still has all the glass and the stock hatch which will be replaced with lexan and a fiberglass hatch. The car weighed 1700lbs on the digital scale!!! Once complete it should be around 2000lbs with the driver! Un-freaking-believable :D

The prototype K member for the stock steering rack is also done and was first road tested tonight. Shamus brought the car back to the fabricator because he thought something was wrong. The fabricator took it out for a spin, came back and said nothing was wrong and that is the way a race car will feel on the road. We are selling these for off road use only and do not recommend driving with it on the street. Between the K member and mounts, the car was over 60lbs lighter!

Well, I bought one of these. It is very well made and the design is well thought out. I have not run this yet, so expect feedback soon. So far though, install was nice and my particualr install needed modifications because the front of my car is already cut and missing some factory mounting points.

My car should run good numbers and be a good test subject on the strength of the k-member.

Thanks for the compliments Gary and we look forward to the additional feedback!

Shamus mentioned you talked to him. Anything else we can do, please let us know :)
