How do you guys pass emission test with all your external wastegates etc..etc...I under stand you can hide the crippled EGR valve but how do you get pass the inspection booth when they all have to cover their ears when you pull up to the station. I am currently running a test-pipe from the previous owner of the car and I don't know how he got pass the emission inspection without a cat and not being flamed!

So again, will you pass emission test with an external wastegate dumping to the atmosphere??????

Chi-town does

Its wierd, Here in IL only those of us around Chi-town have to have the emissions tested. It blows. I just got my notice yesterday that I have to get it tested by the end of feb so I have to go buy a cat this weekend for my one time install for emissions then my test pipe goes back on. IT SUX. What a waste of my mod money

just go buy a cat from a junk yard and hollow it out, and pep boys makes this stuff you can put in your tank that WILL make you pass emissions, forget what its called though.

Some people with very well tuned SAFCs (or PMS or VPC) with dummy cat straight pipes have passed. I wouldn't risk that though.
You will not pass a visual inspection if your external wastegate vents to atmosphere. My friend found that out the hard way. He had it welded back into the downpipe and passed.

I live in Ohio and here in some counties the emisson exist and some dont have to test. I like the idea of buying that cat and putting it on for the test and discard it later.
As for the PMS etc..etc..I cannot afford all that stuff right now...

Funny thing I am buying all these high performance stuff like Supra pump, evo o2,and the list goes on, but yet can't come to the reality of buying a cat. Why! :)

What most ppl do here is register their car in a different county. maybe thats an option.

hey can you guys add your thoughts on the external wastegate too...that was my main concern..

thanks for the help guys!

They used to do emmissions testing in Minnesota of cars over 5 years old and less and than 20 years old(or something), until Jan 2000, then they quite testing all together...

I will be relocating to Dayton, OH from California. Aside from the tailpipe sniffer test, what else was done to your car during the inspection?

Thanks,

Most places where there are a lot of cars or a lot of greenies have emissions tests...

I suppose that's why there are some places out in the middle of nowhere that doesn't have too many cars (but are growing cities) have emissions standards.

Example: Northern Colorado (Loveland, Fort Collins, Greeley). Emissions test required, but these cities are small and pretty much out in the open. At least they're pretty lenient, just a probe up the tailpipe and gas cap checks. Didn't look under hood or anything. I guess Denver's 60 miles away (and have more strict standards) but it's still a lot looser than CA... Then when you go west a bit into the mountains or east a bit into the plains, or north a bit to Wyoming...

(and now they're cracking down on out-of-state registrations too. more for taxation than smogging though.)

BTW- Maryland does the cat check, they even have a mirror-dolly in the STATE emissions test station (i.e. no bribes!) to your car and look if you have a cat... I guess a hollowed one still works. MD also has a dyno in those stations to make sure your car's emissions systems work at highway speeds too! (and NO you don't get a free dyno plot!)

Gas cap and Tail sniff

thats all they do here in Ohio, as far as I have seen. BTW...the cat is off the car and the test goes back on.

Speaking of external wastegates dumping to atmosphere, has anyone had a problem with that? I mean, you're basically venting a 1600 degree flame into the engine bay, so any fires/burnt equipment?

The only thing they don't do emissions on here in cali is bikes muhuhaha My last bike I registered with a 3 stage nitrous kit and yosh race only pipe and ripped out the California model emissions stuff :) heheh

I'm in the same boat though... I gotta fig out how to do exhaust and still keep the smog nazis happy.
