where else could I buy just the cylinder and would that solve the problem
If this is what you are talking about, you can get it at a dealer:

Mitsubishi part number MR376629. It should be only around $30, if you go to a dealer that offers a DSM discount. Try Rockville Mitsubishi or JNZ Tuning.

You could also go to a junkyard or try Mitsubishi Graveyard for a used one.

What happens when you install the replacement cylinder? Does the key get stuck in that one too?

If the key gets stuck in both the new and the old cylinder, the only possible problems left would be that either something inside the steering column interfering with the cylinder causing the key to stick only when its installed, or more likely, the neutral safety switch for the car is broken. I'm not sure how it works on DSMs, but there is probably a solenoid which is operated electrically to keep the keys from being removed while the car is in gear.

Edit: The hynes manual goes into detail about how to test and calibrate the switch (which appears to be located under the shifter assembly).

On my Buick I just bypassed the neutral safety switch and wired it to the power wire of the starter. It just makes it so you have to be carful about not starting the car in drive. If you do that and the problem goes away, it's the switch.

The other possibility is that your ingnition key tumblers are simply off-index and the only thing that you can do about that is replace it.

If that doesn't fix it, then your car is an Autobot and it is doing what ever it damn well pleases:p

this has to do with the safety that makes sure the tranny is in park to remove the key. check the linkage/cable that runs from the shifter to the key cylinder. i think there is an adjustment on the shifter. not sure though. that explains why as soon as you remove the cylinder, the key slides right out. the armature is no longer pushing on the key lock at that point!

edit: i am not sure if its electronic or not.

^^ correct, there is 2 cables, one for the brake pedal and one for the shifter. Mine would't come out for the life of me. I was at walmart and the dang key would't come out so i went the the chrysler dealer accross the street, found out the prev-owner when installing the stereo had it kinked up. Charged me $45 to clean the mess up. 5days later it started doing it again, so i got out the haynes manual and checked the two cables, and found out more kinks in the cables, so i just removed them both. there about $15 a cable.
