Once you are rolling it is fine if you use a manual rack. I would not recommend using a looped power rack even though it works. It is not the same as true manual steering. The car I got my rack out of came that way from the factory so it has to be somewhat safe.

I actually removed the power steering because I wanted to do it like you guys are wanting to, it did not just go out on me. It was a pain with the lines looped. I have driven several cars with manual racks and they are alot easier to drive than a 2g with looped lines. If they made a manual rack for a 2g I would do it again, but since they do not, I will be keeping my power steering.

Very true, I took out that and the A/C and the engine bay looks so much better. If you have the stock steering wheel on your car still, it will be won't be hard at all to turn. I had a sparco steering wheel on my car for a while and it was a little tougher, but I just recently sold it and threw the stock one back on and it was like 20X easier to turn, almost feels like I still have P/S haha.
Yea all my power steering and a/c shit is gone as well. My battery is in my trunk also. I could care less to have all that shit on my car to be honest with you, mine only sees the road on the weekends anyway (when its not raining).

Ok, let me be more specific, I DON'T care if you have a manual rack. This thread is for a 2G NOT a 1g. We all know that you can get a manual rack for a 1g, but NOT a 2g.
Please let's talk 2g's only.

I unhooked every single line (from the rack, from the pump, etc...all of them) and turned the steering wheel left and right until all the fluid drained out from the ports on the rack. Works fine for me, no complaints. Have had it this way for about 2 months now and I am very used to it now. Maybe my arms grew stronger because of it haha.

My friend has a 1.8 dsm and it's a plane jane. As plane as they can get. When he bought it the, previous owner took out the a/c and the ps. But I think the pump was still there and it left a mess behind. And my friend drove it as if the was nothing wrong with it. It was his DD untill he parked it to drive is JDM.

Well just so everyone knows, the reason I'm thinking about this is because my belt ALWAYS squeeks, until I spray some wd40 on it. It's not too tight, and I'm thinking the pump may go out soon, so it's just a thought.

Gamble,

Check this site out. I don't think a rack is available for 2G's so this would be the best option. The tutorial is shown using a Miata rack but should apply to the 2G rack. Some things will obviously be different but you will get the idea. I am planning on doing this when I pull my engine but it will most likely be this winter. I would love to get some feedback before I do mine but my mind is pretty much made up. Hope it helps.

I know that this is a old thread but has any body try this?^

I know this is an old thread again. lol

Im ditching the PS in my 2g, After i pull all the lines and pump and tank, do i leave the ports on the rack open or do i loop them? I searched and some people said if you loop them it makes it harder to steer and i also read that the rack will still need to be lubricated or it may seize. I couldnt see it happening, but would it be best to drain almost all the fluide from the rack and then loop the ports? Or just leave them open period?

On my 1g I have left my ports open on the rack. There is still some fluid in there that isn't able to get out unless I were to drain it. It's been fine for 5 or so months now.

Just finished up the build. I forgot to put the PS bracket back on my 2G. so I said fuck it. I cannot get the bracket to go behind the water pipe and I am not going to rip all that shit out to put it on. bing bang boom look ma no power steering!!
