Even with the ALDL plug there are only three wires that get connected. They are just packaged differently. So yes it has the same funcitons and IMO it is not worth the $$.
Ah ha! Thanks for the info. I'm gonna run to Radioshack and Home Depot right now! =)

Alright, I now have my Palm installed with MMCD, I'm finishing up my logger cable, but where can I get a Hotsync cable?

Does that look ok? I know it's a crappy pic, but I only have a crappy phone. Here's a description so maybe you can understand what i did.

I was dealing with very little space to fit in the housing, so everything was pretty cramped. I'll work from left to right in the picture.

Pin 5 - I just soldered in some of the extension off of a resistor. Then off of that I soldered one side of my speaker wire.

Pin 3 - Again, soldered in an extension from pin to right behind the diode on pin 2.

Pin 2 - Soldered diode with black band away from pin. Extension from pin 3 connects right behind diode.

10k resistor bridges the two speaker wires right as they connect with extensions.

Sound and look good?

Tried the cable and it didn't work. Tried repeatedly and didn't work. So that along with my flickering Palm backlight is pissing me off.

That looks about right to me. I would have put a bit more space between the resistor and the diode. My recommendation is to double check your connections going to your ALDL port. I remade two different cables and when I had problems getting them to operate it seemed thats where the problem was.

Alright, you can see that it's one continuous cable from right after the DIN connector all the way up until the spades. Is that just a really good job of shrink tubing or what?
See this thread is over a week old, but that is the logger I bought off of here. I popped open the serial connector and to help seal the connections it was filled with the "craft hot glue gun stuff." The cable is in good condition, he heat shrink all the spade connectors and also the end of the cable. I'm pretty sure you finished your cable by now, but wanted to explain that datalog setup.

Its been a while (3 years) since I last made a cable. I made it per the diagram listed about (same I used last time) and this time I cant get the damn thing to work!

Here is a pic of the new cable:

Serial Side:

Both ends of cable:

I checked and double checked tomake sure everything is per the diagram and soldered correctly.

My only thought is maybe the resistor or diode got too hot while soldering it...

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I've searched high and low for the female connector going into the diagnostics port and I can't find a source to save my life. Are you SURE they're in the 1g n/ts?
What do you mean? You can't find the diagnostics port? I'm still not sure what you're asking, so here's a picture of how the end of the cable should hook up to the diagnostic port. (Which all 1g's have btw.)

Hopefully that helps?

Fuck i'm a dumbass... I meant the Male connector going INTO the diag port.

Lol, its cool. I dunno where you'll find 'em though. I have a 1g n/t but I can't find it in my car. Nor have I been able to find them in any other cars.

Alright, I haven't had a chance to update this until now, but seeing as it's warmer weather now, and I've got a better camera that takes better pictures I figured I'd throw up a pic of my cable. I'm pretty sure that it's done correctly, but take a look and tell me what you think.

I made this cable as well and can not get it to work in my 1990. can anyone help. Im getting mad about this. I want to be able to tune and can not do so with a faulty cable.... Does it matter which way the resistor and diode is turned in flow of electricity?

Diodes are directional and need to be placed in the correct orientation. I cant remember the exact position off the top of my head but if the schematic reads like this >| that means current flows from left to right and the bar marking on the diode needs to be on the right. This cable will work flawlessly if put together correctly. I have built numerous cables without any problems. Ohh and forget about locating that ALDL connector - if you find it the price is so ridiculous it defeats the purpose of making your own cable.

Did you check the direction of the diode? I would remake the cable with the black ring closest to the plug. I think I remember in my lab class that diodes go one way.
edit: I guess someone already got to it before me :p

I hope I'm not hijacking this thread, but I've made a cable and it looks just like the one in the 'tuners thread. I can tell the ECU to prime the pump and make the solenoids go, but only if the recieve pin is disconnected. Otherwise I get nothing. I've tried it on two different laptops, one with a serial port, one with a USB to serial, same result. It's driving me nuts that I'm so close, but so far!

Could you possibly post up pictures of the ALDL side of the cable? I have seen the Tuners diagram, but I like the clean look of yours and was wondering if your ALDL followed that pattern. Thank you.
