Well I did a search for this but found no helpfull info. I get a pretty loud whiring noise coming from my driveshaft/rear end area only when I decelerate. I recently replaced my engine/tranny/tcase and the car made the noise before that, so I can eliminate the tranny/tcase as being the problem. The noise definatly seems to be coming from the driveshaft/rear end. If I could pinpoint it I would say under the center console is where its coming from.

The noise is much more noticible in 2nd and 3rd gear when I decelerate. It happens when I let off the gas, but if I do this and then either take it out of gear or push the clutch in the noise goes away. When im going faster in 4th or 5th gear the noise is much less noticable.

Im thinking either the driveshaft carrier bearings or U-joints?

What do you think? I do have a spare driveshaft, so I might try to replace it and see if that helps. This is on a 1990 AWD.

Oh, I should also add that I have a stock OEM flywheel and Im sure all the flywheel bolts are tight. I read some posts where people were having the same problem and they thought it might be from a lighter flywheel.

I have a similar thing happening with my dads car. I'm ruling out driveshaft on mine because it has been rebuilt. I do believe its the rear diff on its way out. I've changed the fluid but think there is too much play in the gears. I would say try swapping drive shafts and eliminating that. Then search for a 4bolt.

It's a good possibility that's where the noise is coming from. I talked to quite a few people, as well as a couple of tranny builders, that say the puck clutches tend to be noisy on deceleration.

I have a 6-puck sprung disk. I doubt its that as like I said, it made the noise before i did all the drivetrain work. THe only thing left is the rear driveshaft and the rear diff/axels. I have a whole complete 4 bolt rear end anyways, along with two driveshafts, and another complete 3 bolt rear end, so I guess Ill figure this problem out sooner or later.

The noise definalty sounds like its coming from the driveshaft or rear diff.

I wouldn't worry about it, it seems to be a common problem. My old car didnt' do it (stock) until I put in a 2600 act and a lightweight fly....The grumbing deceleration started. I have seen where people replace EVERYTHING from the tranny back to no avail. After that I FINALLY realized that DSM"s do weird things and make weird noises, just don't worry about it LOL
