I've got new ss steel studs and I was wondering what ft-lb I should torque my studs into the head to? I asked the ss guy and he said you don't torque them, you just thread them in by hand and thats it. I'm not sure if I believe him so I am asking here.

You dont torque them. Just like head studs.

excellent, So thread it by hand or snug it up with a stud remover socket? And on a 1g the middel lower stud you have to red rtv right? Because has an oil passage on the other side, I read this somewhere, is it true.

You dont torque the studs in, you torque the nut on after the mani is on.

And I believe torque for the nuts is relatively low. In the 20s or low 30s. On my MR2 its like 31 ft lbs. It doesnt take alot. And you want to use antisieze on them too.

I know, torque is 18-22ftlb for the nuts. I threaded the studs all the way in and snuged them up and left it at that. I checked and I couldent poke anything threw any of the threads so no oil passage so no red rtv on any studs, must be a 2g thing or the person who typed it in this forum somewhere was wrong. Anyways it is done!

Ive never used RTV on any of my exhaust studs on any of my builds (lol my engine has been done 3 times in various stages)

Never had an oil leak down there either.

I do use antisieze though, but I doubt that would "contain" an oil leak.

Maybe I got lucky or something LOL.

Dude, what the fuck are you talking about? You dont torque head studs???

No, not the studs. You torque the nuts.

What hes saying is you FINGER thread the STUDS into the block, then you tighten the nuts onto them and torque THEM down.

Chiltons manuel's is way off for the 2nd gens. I should have known though. I broke a stud in no time. But... I'm pro at removing broken bolts. No helicoil needed. Original threads only ;)

I have the stud socket and I antisiezed all the studs and put red rtv on the middle stud for some reason, I read it somewhere and someone just told me to do it. Then I threaded them all the way in and snuged them up. Hopefully when I bolt up the header I don't rip any studs out, I think I should be fine. And helicoils suck, the person who owned the car before me had at lest 2 helicoils in there because their:dunno: , some of the helicoils thread riped out of one thread but I still had plenty of threads left in there to bolt the stud in secure.

So what is the consesus on nut torque? 18-22 sound right to everyone, I have a ss kit with washers and lock washers. 18ftlb sounds about right doesent it?

You do realize your not gonna be able to torque the lower ones right?
Why couldnt I torque my lower studs down? I have the entire front of my engine off. I would say torqueing to 1 or 2 foot pounds would be safe and a sure bet. There has to be some spec, not thread them in and forget about it, cross the fingers.

There is nothing wrong with a heli coil if it is done properly. Heli coil is always my last resort. It's not fun to drill exhaust studs. You have to have a carbide bit. They are to hard.

Check what a manual says. It will be close if not exactly the same as these.

I put them in at 30 if I remember correctly.
