So I have recently switched from putting premium fuel in my car to regular :chair: My car has been running fine but recently it starts to jerk and feels like the engine is shaking while driving unless I really give it gas. It feels like it is having trrouble getting fuel to the engine, do you think that putting regular unleaded gas could have clogged my fuel filter or did something to my fuel pump because I also have a CEL now.

Yea I know but my bro told me it didnt matter and would only affect how my turbo spools :chair: but I will check what code I am getting soon. I also noticed that my car backfired whene building boost. But my question still is that can a clogged fuel filter cause this

Your bro is a moron that's about to cost you a bunch of $$$$ then. Turbo's need the higher octane fuel to reduce pre-ignition and detonation. A shot o2 sensor could also give you fits like that. Might as well change the fuel filter out though. That's a cheap easy piece of prevenative maintenance.

You have been here since Sept of 07, you should know the answer to your problem right now.

ANSWER: You're a moron.

Yeah, I said it. MORON.

Dont put 87 in a car designed for premium, you will blow your engine to save $2.50 a tank. Not worth it my friend.

It was not the 87 clogging your filter, its the 87 octane causing your car to go into limp mode to make sure you dont blow up your engine.

I'm not one to give someone a really hard time about causing their own problems...but honestly this is just a no brainer, sir. Don't get into boost on 87 octane unless you want to start knocking anytime you see boost. There is a REASON your dash and the inside of your gas door says premium fuel only.

Think of it this way:

Regular (87): $4

Plus (89) $4.09

Premium (91+) $4.19

Most, if not all (not sure about 1gs), have a 16.9 gallon tank. We'll round to 17 for easier number figuring.

$4/gallon (87) x 17 gallon tank = $68

$4.19/gallon (91+) x 17 gallon tank = $71.23

$71.23 - $68 = $3.23

So from a bare empty tank to full you are spending a whole $3.23 more on premium gas. Ok, so you won't be able to go to McDonald's and get yourself a double cheeseburger meal for $2.99 an extra time this week. It's not that big of a deal. You're protecting your engine, sir.

Please read on what octane actually does for your car. And NO, do not go out and buy "octane boosters" thinking they will make up for it. Not only are you just wasting more money, but who wants to add "super duper octane power booster" to their gas tank anyway?

Here are a few articles on octane:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

http://www1.epinions.com/content_2346164356

epinions.com article said:
The AKI (anti-knock index -- also known as "octane rating") of the fuel is an average of two different methods of computing the fuel's ability to resist engine knock. Regular unleaded gas in the U.S. has an anti-knock index of 87, while mid-grade is usually 89, and premium typically is 91 - 93. The higher the number, the more anti-knock protection the fuel offers.

That right there should tell you why to put premium in your car. :chair:

Yep, very true. That's what I wanted to say, but I decided to be nice.

Kind of reminds me... why do businesses place warning labels on their products? So you are WARNED ahead of time. Example: "Product contains nuts and milk ingredients". If you're allergic to nuts, or lactose intolerant, probably not a good idea to eat it.

Or when a sign on the road says "ROAD ENDS". You don't keep driving on the road do you?

Hmm...but when your car says PREMIUM ONLY in BOLD you don't follow the directions. :tat: :tat: :tat: :tat:

Alright thanks guys and yea I deserved it. So if I, and I am, switch back to premium should things go back to normal? Also just wondering why in my 91 Eclipse gst I would put regular unleaded always and nothing would happen?

Something happened, you just didnt notice.

You will need to drain the 87 and throw in 91 or, if you can find it locally, put in as much 100 unleaded as you can to help bring up the octane level, about 5 gallons.

I was not trying to be mean, just letting you know how I know best that what you did was a BIG, BIG NO NO. :D
