i just looked at a 91 tsi. it has a gm maf and has a maf translator. the kid says the maf translator is toast so its making it run like crap.. it will take the boost just fine. but idles very rough and drives rough untill about 2500 rpm when the boost starts..what do you guys think the prob is? is the maf translator the problem? it almost seems like the timing is off but i dont think thats it..anyone?

Judging by your join date and lack of capitalization, you must be new to DSMTalk. I'd like to remind you that here at DSMTalk we prefer to communicate using contemporary English Punctuation and capitalization. Friendly warning.

Good call, Lex. I've been pretty horrible lately, I'm surprised no one has called me on it. Anyway, do you have any comments as to his thread? I know it wasn't "correct", but I'd like to hear some experiance talk for awhile....:p

93_GSX, my comment was geared more towards the OP, but I applaud you for coming clean :). We all miss-type something here or there, but it's your attitude that tells us volumes about what kind of person you are.

Back on topic.....
I personally would NEVER touch a car with a GM translator. They are horrible, inconsistent, and worthless if you ask me. I've turned down many clients becuase they were running a GM maf. Why anyone would goto a GM maf over a 2g MAS is beyond me.

It can totally be a boost leak. In fact, once I chucked the Gm maf Trans, in favor of a DSMLink/2g MAS setup, the first thing I'd do is a boost leak test.

With problems like this, it could be a variety of things. It could be something as simple as a bad spark plug cable.

When in doubt, don't buy it. There are plenty of awesome cars out there looking for a new owner.

Car is not tune at idle so buy it then get a logger and tune the Idle. If the MAF-T was bad it would not run had one go bad on me.

^^Speaking of rule number seven....

I know Lex was talking to the OP, but I felt the need to bring my faults to the table, maybe to ease the pain of being a newb, and let him know there is light at the end of the tunnel for us all....

Mike that's a horribly constructed sentence! You should be  .

Also, just FYI, you're sig is too big.

Not true at all. Besides, it doesn't necessarily need to go bad, in order to make your car run like dookie pellets.

I would be receiving this car on a trade for my boosted prelude. It has a safc and I just thought I could take off the GM MAF and go to factory MAF and retune it. It takes the boost just fine and smoothes out when boost is present. It has an exhaust leak right from the exhaust manifold connecting to the head. He says the MAF-T flashes 7 red. He told me this means its toast.

Re: just looked at a tsi im thinking about getting butttt..have a couple tech questions

We had a maf-t go bad on a friend's car and the symptom's are very similar to having a bad or unplugged normal maf. How would I know? Let's just say one time I forgot to plug everything back in :D

If the guy is sure that it's a bad translator, see if you can track one down and swap it in to see if the car runs better. I find it a bit weird though that you say the car runs fine after it finds boost. On my friend's car, after the translator went bad the car ran like ass the whole time. He had to limp it over to my house (at the time, we didn't know what was wronge with it) and would buck, stumble, and try to shut off every chance it got.

Honestly though, I would personally avoid this car. It wouldn't be worth it unless you're getting an amazing deal on it.

Thanks for Pointing out my Sentence. I thank you with this :chair:.

As for the Maf-T going bad on my brothers car it just quit working. Went out for a quick drive then started acting like Fuel cut. Got it home and it died try to restart it and no dice. Put a 1G Mas in and fired right up. I still say its in the Idle knob which is making it run like Poo.
