Hi, in my quest for 350hp, I'm going to do a full maintenance. My moms mechanic said to change my timing belt and power steering belt would be 300$ in labor alone. Now he said i would have to change the cam seals and h2o pump ect. Does that sound right? Is that too much for labor? Anything else i should have him do? And were is some were that i can get good maintenance parts like belts ect. Thanks guys/gals.

Labor should be about 3 hours, so $80x3= $240 for the timing belt.

Labor on the water pump should be about 30 minutes so add another $40 for $280

Labor on the cam seals maybe 15 minutes so it sounds about right.

Your best bet for parts would be www.jnztuning.net on Friday ( you may want to call them so you can get part numbers ) they are having a sale for Black Friday so you will save a lot of money as they already sell OEM Mitsu parts at about 15-20% off and are tacking on about 5% more in savings.

OEM/JNZ

Timing belt $78/$61
Water pump$157/$122

There are the differences just to give you an idea and that is not on the Black Friday sale price, that is thier everyday price, drop another 5% off for Fridays price.

Just remember, you will need a new tensioner, pulley for the timing belt, balance shaft belt as well.

Tensioner is about $45
Pulley is about $20
Balance shaft belt, I have no idea on the cost.

When doing a timing belt job, the balance shaft belt and water pump should be replaced as you have to take off the timing belt to get to the water pump, its cheaper and easier to just do it at the same time.

Get parts in this forum, I bet someone has a nice timing belt for sale here. Get the power steering/altinator belt at autozone. I believe the water pump is a bear, from what I know you basically have to take the exhaust off the front of the car + some to get at the coolant pipe so you can take it off to get at the water pump on a 91tsi that is, not positive though. why replace the water pump if it is working fine? What does your timing belt look like? Is it in bad shape? I guess you don't want it to break and ruin your valves, I hope your mechanice has the mitsu tensioner tools for the belt. Also, if you wan't a 350hp car you have a long ways to go, especially if you are having a mechanice do all of the work for you. I hope you have deep pockets:)

Always do the water pump with the timing belt, timing belt is a 70,000 mile item, water pump could last longer but its easier and cheaper to replace it at the same time because the timing belt has to come off. Why pull the belt off, replace the water pump and then have to put a new belt and tensioner on again? Do it one time and do it right.

Also, when modding a car, its always a good idea to get all the maintenance done first, timing belt etc so you know you have a healthy engine to work it. I do my belt every couple of years. To put it this way, its a 70,000 mile item I replace approx every 4,000 miles because I am making quite a bit of HP. Cheaper to replace the belt then the engine and it takes a lot less time. I can do a timing job in about 2 hours.

Exhaust does not need to come off to do a timing job.

Never buy a used OEM timing belt, always buy new.

Cool, I thought to get at the water pump you needed to take the coolant pipe off that runs behind the turbo and exhaust manifold. I was saying new timing belt in the forums for sale section, bet someone has a nice new performance belt laying around like a greddy for cheap.

yea thanks alot, the car has about 124k and the engine is a 6bolt swap with around 61k. so i figured i should change it now.

I'm a guy. lol. And i don't know why my post numbers are still at 5.

i wish i had deep pockets but I realy lack the knowledge and tools to do certain things my self... sucks. I'm still adding supporting mods but before I i start increasing power i HAVE to do these.

$300 is way too much in my opinion. I paid $300 labor to install a clutch kit to a transmission shop. As for timing belt I was charged $100 for labor and $80 for the timing belt kit.

You don't have to buy a water pump. However, it is recommended that you do.

I guess it depends if you go to a big shop or a smaller one and if you live in the south or the north. People in the south tend to not screw you over as much.

Cost of labor is about $70-$80 a hour, depending on where you go, at least in CA it was, dont know about the 'lower cost of living' states. Timing belt/water pump is about a 2.5 hour job, $75 x 3 = $225 that is not counting the time it takes to do the cam seals. Add in another 30 minutes and that is $300 labor.

In the tech Section any way. Also, that seems fair for labor. As for parts, I recommend buying OEM or better. 350 is a moddest goal, so a kevlar belt is over kill. Have a good look at the other timing components and look at Vfaq.com. It gives a step by step changing your timing belt write up. It really isnt as hard as it is intimidating to a noob :p.

Don't cheap out. First rule.

Wow I didn't know that...

Hediki, it's better to pay a little better for GOOD work than to pay for shitty work. IMO you should find a reputable DSM shop around you, they couldn't possibly charge much more than $300, and you may as well have it done right.

Think of it this way, you're already paying $300, what's another $50 for peace of mind and better work. Ya know? Good luck to you either way, you're definitely on the right track.
