Ok so I am back after a long time gone, (no money for mods and no issues!) So anyway here is my prob instead of adding to others with no clarity of my own problems. I drive a 95' AWD which had the clutch replaced about a year ago along with the first and second synchros and shift rails ect... Got about nine thousand miles on it with no issues, shifts great, amazing!
FFWD to now;
Last weekend I was on a roadtrip with several hours of stop and go- two hours going up a snow covered hill slipping clutch tons... I finally make it out of the traffic and get up to interstate speeds and about an hour after the huge climb my shifter pops outta fifth for the first time ever. I try to get it back into gear and there is grinding and resistance so I get into fourth and then into fifth, which is then making some strange noise(grinding, whirring)
I limp it home for hours in mostly fourth due to the noise in fifth. The next morning I try to drive it around the block and I have no reverse at all. It wants to pop into fourth instead. No reverse. Like it does not exist. All gears are a little harder to get into now. Drove around the block (after pushing in reverse down driveway and drives fine 1-4, used fifth once and it got stuck in fifth.

I know I am gonna have to take it down to Jacks Transmissions I am just wondering if there is anything I can do in the meantime. Can I open the side of the tranny near the pass tire? Would that show me anything I need to see?

My first thought was slipping clutch for hours= glazed over, will be fine with time.
Second thought is shift fork? Do fifth and reverse share the shift fork?

Opinions are appreciated- questions are welcome too I am sure I left something out...
Thanks a bunch guys

Do you by chance have a 6 bolt. Most of the time the lower radiator hose will block the counterweight on the transmission, and if won't fully shift. Also another VERY common problem is loose bolts holding the shifter rails. CHECK THEM. It's most likely a very simple issue.

It is a seven bolt, can I see those thru the plate on the pass side or would I have to drop the tranny to check the shifter rails? Do fifth and reverse share a shift rail?
Thanks for the reply-

Yeah all other gears are fine, I found no linkage prob but will check that out more in depth, it really feels bigger than that though, no reverse at all, cant find it... And it happened in the middle of a long drive, not like I was racing or banging through the gears so I dunno.
Thank you, any other Ideas!?

Hudson Hawk, How exactly do I check the rails?
-I hope its something simple!

Anyone have any insite on the passenger side that I could open up and look into? Will this be helpful at all or a waste of time? Wanna do it tomorrow...

I would like to rule out shift linkages for sure as well as any other non trans related problems before I drive for hours down to Jack's with my newly dropped trans only to find out it was something easy...
Thanks guys

I have the same problem, but it's intermittent. Shifter pops part of the way out in fifth, stays in that position for a while, then goes into neutral. Most of the time, I can't go into reverse. No grinding or noise, just won't shift. Once in a while, I'll try reverse, and it works fine, usually when I'm parking after driving a bit, but once or twice when the car is cold.

Any ideas?

Craig

it sounds like symptoms from the shaft nut in the extension housing loosening up. Causing popping out of fifth and such and no reverse. I'm no tranny expert but i'd think it's either that or a rail.

Mine seems like it could be the latter link there, Jack, seems to think its the same as well, I hope so as it sounds pretty easy...
Now I am waiting for snow to melt so I can go check it...
Will keep the post up to date when I do.
Thank you for the responses-

As far as that second thread^, (thanks ROAD RACE VR-4) it says I need to start the whole process with my car in reverse, but I cannot do that! I want to open it up and look, and I guess I will either way to know for sure, but will this fix even work if my trans is not in Reverse? Thank you-
-Jason

On the driver side the proper way to keep the crank from turning is the center crank bolt that's in the center of the crank pulley. It accepts a 1/2inch drive and whatever size it is. i dunno i always just use a breaker bar on that fucker.

I would also suspect that nut coming loose, you can remove the roll pin from the 5th gear shift fork and manual slide the hub to engage 5th. Then shift it into another gear 1-4 and as the trans is locked in 2 gears at once you can then properly torque the two 36mm nuts.

Well I opened up the passenger side of the tranny and it was that top nut, finger tight... And it is too late for the fix... Fifth gear is toast, as it came out in about three pieces...
-Thanks for the replys guys.

Well, I haven't fixed mine; haven't had time, plus I have no garage. So could somebody tell me: What is a shifter rail? What does it look like? How do I get to them? I have tried adjusting the shifter, but it seemed perfectly centered, and nothing I did made any difference. Will try opening the passenger side of the tranny when I can.

To get to the shift rails the trans needs to come apart. If the car is just popping out of 5th jack up the passenger side of the car, remove the front wheel and splash guard, take the very end case off of the trans. See if the nuts are tight on the end of the shafts. If they aren't get a 36mm socket and tighten them to about 109 ft/lbs.

OK, I finally found time to tackle this. The top nut was so loose I could turn it with my fingers. So I torqued it down to 110, then put it back together. The transmission was very low on fluid, so I put fresh fluid in. I followed the write-up linked to in an earlier post. The car shifts better in 1-4, but grinds when I reach for fifth and won't go into gear. Trying to shift into reverse is like hitting a wall with the shifter. No grinding; it just won't go at all.

The shift linkage is on top of the transmission, and there's nothing that would block it.

Any more ideas?

Craig

Bump?

Another question. The 5th gear shift fork slides in and out on when shifting. When in fifth, should the shift fork move inward until it's right up against the transmission? About half an inch of the shaft is still visible when I push the shift fork inward--or move the shift lever as far as it will go to the right. Is it supposed to work like that?

Sorry for being such a dunce, but I've never had a transmission apart before. Fixing my motorcycle is a hell of a lot easier.
