How much do the stock rims for DSM's weigh? I am not asking about one type in particular but weights for each individual kind.

95-96 RS 14"'s
95-96 GS 16"
95-96 Swirl 16"
97-99 RS
97-99 5 spoke Silver
97-99 5 spoke chrome

These are the ones I am mainly interested in, but the 1g models would be great to post too for other's benefit. I seriously do not like the rims the previous owner has put on my car and would love to switch back to the stock 5 spokes especially the chrome ones if I could but weight is a major issue and I will not do it if they weigh alot. Thanks for any help you guys can give.

Damn that is heavy as hell. Someone out there tell me that the Late model 2g rims are a little lighter than that.

That isn't as bad a 47lbs.

Those are 17" and I wanna swap for 16" rims as that is what I have right now and I don't wanna go out and buy new tires as mine already cost 200 a piece

Never actually weighed mine but I was told by more then one person that the double 5 spoke 17's are around the 24-25 pound mark. I would like to know myself but it sounds like alot of work to go dismounting a tire and all just to weigh my rim.

steel weighs more than alluminum. the alloy wheels probably weigh alot less than the steel ones..... and 50 lbs seems like alot for a steel wheel and tire.... has anyone else ever weighed their wheels?

chrome 16

From the digest a couple of weeks back

After doing some searches I wasn't able to find the weight of the stock 2G
16" chrome wheel, I also have Dunlop SP8000 ZRs in stock size (205/55/16).
I did find (in the digest) the weight of the Dunlop SP 8000 in stock size
they said 23.4 lbs.

Ok So I removed my wheel and used a bathroom scale (I even checked the scale
with a gallon of water which should be at 7-8lbs, ok good enough)

I got 36lbs!

Now the tread on the tire is such that I NEED new tires, but still! If you
subtract the weight of the tire the weight of the chrome wheel is ridiculous
light.
This can't be right. I assumed the chrome wheel was very heavy. Perhaps the
worn tire is much lighter then 23.4lbs.

So does anyone know the weight of the stock 16" chrome wheel? Thank you.

It seems to me the reason this wheel is not so heavy is because of its size, 16x6. Most people plus sizing go with a wider wheel and tire (17x7 or 18x7.5) so you would be hard pressed loosing weight when your new wheels are wider. There is just more wheel.

That said I still think his scale is off. Most 205/55/16 tires weigh in the neighborhood of 20lbs which would mean the 16" chrome is weighs 16lbs. Doubt it!

Well I'll be damned, something that actually comes pretty close to the answer. These figures aren't verified and are from a page that has some other questionable figures but I think I'll take it's word on it. You think the chrome 16"ers would cost much more than the silver allow ones?

Ya that was my post to the talon digest.
The 16" chromes weight in around 18lbs.
Someone from the digest replied to me (I belive they also posted) saying they had a chrome 16" (no tire) and weight it. This would agree with my numbers. Yes the 16x6 chrome is very light.
In constrast my new 17" Mas Italy Gipsy wheels and tires (17x7.5, 225/45) weight 49lbs (vs 36lbs)

BTW Im selling my 16" chrome if anyone is in SoCa.

Can the stock rims run 225 width tires on them? I know nothing about rims and just am curious as that is the width tire I run now and I am trying to be able to keep the tires I have.

Yeb, 225 works fine, but for a GSX I would use 205 when you change. I use 225 for the icreased traction but it reduces my handling due to the sidewall being squished in.

Cold that slight change cause the inner wall of my tire to become bald faster? I JUST replaced my front 2 tires because they wore out on the inside end, I thought it was a camber problem and even had the alignment checked just to be sure it wasn't alignment.

my new 17" wheels and tires are noticeable lighter than the stock 16's. i have 225 50 16 on my stock wheels, but i don't like how the sidewall is bulged out from the wheels being so narrow. a 6" wide wheel shouldn't have much more than a 205 tire. the bulging sidewall becomes unstable at high speed cornering.

The stock rims are only 6" wide? I thought they were 7"
