I bought my first TSI a couple weeks ago. Car seemed great and my dad was taking it to a tranny shop to see about fixing 3rd gear syncro. He says he was going 75 in 5th gear and at about 90 mph the headgasket blew. The cylinder head looks like new, new headgasket and new head bolts. The headbolts took almost no effort to remove :dunno:. Except the left and right most bolts. Any ideas?

Large pics...so here are the links

welll for starters i dont like to use those kind of head gaskets...if you said it was recently replaced you should have gone with some sort of MLS headgasket...and for what caused the damage, was the head in ok condition when you took it off?...was it pressure tested before installed?

i remember when i blew my first motor , it was due to a faulty spring and the valve got stuck open n jus destroyed my motor....but other then tht i say you jus go get your head rebuilt, order a new MLS headgasket and jus have a stock rebuild

From what you are describing about the condition of the head and the pictures of the gasket i think the head is warped. It looks to me as if the car overheated previously, warped the head and they just changed the gasket. Have the head checked for flatness before you slap it back on. By the way get some arp's while its off.

If you look at the gasket, it is blown on cylinders 1,3,and 4. The problem was caused by 1 of 2 possibilities, the head wasn't torqued properly or the head was warped. Get that head resurfaced, an OEM gasket, and some ARP's and be done with it. Unless you are running a hell of a lot of boost then get some L19's.

Nope, it's all stock. I think what I'm gonna do is get another headgasket an try that with proper torque and of course make sure the head isnt warped. I'm almost positive that it wasn't torqued down enough. If it blows again, then I will have to do more work, but almost every nut/bolt I took off was either finger loose, or not very tight. Even nut that holt the driver side mount to the car were finger loose??

Holy shit lots of rule number 7 fail in this thread. Please read it, and abide by it.

As stated by everyone else, it is possible the head is warped. It looks to me like that head gasket is new, and should not have blown under normal conditions. Another possibility is that they didn't torque the head down correctly.

Get the head checked!

An interesting thing happened while I was redoing the timing. I noticed the balance shaft belt missing but thought nothing of it...until it fell out from the back of the engine! Then I noticed that the crank was about 1 cm from TDC, but the cams were aligned before I tore the engine apart. So I'm guessing the crank was still compressing uring combustion causing excessive pressure.

Last time I checked Cometic and Felpro both made MLS head gaskets. The OEM composit gasket is the best one to use IMO.
