Now with K&N, some free mods, and a 2.5" muffler. Im planning on getting a high-flow catalytic converter then get b-guage/MBC. I found one that sells them for only $40

Description:
"This polished stainles steel test pipe will fit any Turbo DSM, fwd and awd, 1gen and 2gen. It is fully polished. It will fit your stock downpipe, your aftermarket downpipe and your thermal exhaust or greddy etc."

Should i go for it? Is it legal or illigal? What effects would it have on my car? psi gain? hp gain? bla.. bla.. bla.. info, info, and more info's please!

I think you are confusing a test pipe and a high flow catalytic converter. The test pipe that you are talking about is just a pipe that is placed in the exhaust in place of the cat. High flow cats are usually in the area of $200 I believe.

A test pipe is illegal! But we use them anyway. ;)

Testpipes are illegal as they are just a straight pipe that replaces the catalytic convertor, so there is no filter to take away pollution in the exhaust. A testpipe will allow you to run leaded race gas and will provide slightly more power than a racing cat. AHP Products sells race cats for 90 dollars. I had a local exhaust shop make me a 2.5" testpipe for 20 dollars by the way they just wouldn't install it as it is illegal.

Same thing. Wat i dont get it. I thought:
Test pipe = catalytic converter or high-flow(after market)

It's at MUFFLERTECH.com

I plan on staying with a cat, one, because I know it's illegal otherwise, and two, the 3-8HP gain I would gain not running a cat is not worth having to smell the exhaust fumes without one. There are many other places to get that little extra performance out of our cars, like take the subwoofers out and run lighter rims and such that I would rather do than destroying the environment around me. I have been thinking of running a 3" cat and cat-back, instead of the restrictive factory size cat on my car, I would think that by running a larger diameter cat it would be more free flowing than the factory size high-flow cat. On my truck I plan on getting rid of the factory exhaust, going to duals means I need 2 cats, they will be both be high-flow ones from Jegs.com. I've seen too many people buy high-flow cats in the exact same size as the one they started with instead of buying a larger sized one which is why I beleive they do not notice much of a gain. I could be completely wrong though.......

I might go with the test pipe since. 1. straight thru 2. makes more HP over h-f cat. 3. 50% cheaper ..but smelly?! is it really that stinky?! hmmm..

Maybe i could just ask my local muffler shop if they could make my 2.5" muffler a "cat-back"

what is the penalty if the police caught you having test pipes on your car? in general..

to me, i don't think the extra 5-7 hp justify having a test pipe over a high flow cat. Sure, it's half as expensive as a catalytic converter. But guess what. WHen you get caught by the guys in blue, the penalty fee you have to pay is more than enough to buy you TWO high flow catalytic converters. Not to mention the pollution you cause to the environment.

Don't get test pipes unless your car is used for Track use ONLY.

Go to http://www.diamondstarspecialties.com/tips.html

Follow all those simple freebie mods and you are looking at a 15 hp gain. That's 210 + 15 = 225 hp <-------equals stock WRX hp!!

Xstacy, didnt you used to have a 2G GSX? anyway, i am so confused about the test pipe. People say i should go for it since its less restrictive as Hi-Flo cat. Even if its illegal, cops wont know anyway, and ppl run around with them and not getting pulled over :) About the environment.. leaves are falling and its almost winter. I dont think i harming much the lovely trees surrounding me in this season.

Thanks for the tips ;)

Yes like said before "What penalty is given when caught with test pipe"? i think the 15-20hp on a $40 test pipe is a good $$ to power ratio

Don't use a test pipe. A car that runs no cat is polluting about 10X as much as one that does, all things being equal. There is a reason why automobiles use cats, and that is because we dump thousands of tons of CO (carbon monoxide), CO2(carbon dioxide), HC's (hydrocarbons) and other gasses into the atmosphere every year.
Not running a cat is contributing to the Greenhouse effect, not to mention the fact that you are helping to posion everyone on earth (air circulates all around the earth)

By the war our atmosphere is only 10mi high, if you think there is an abundance of air to pollute, then think again.

If you think pollution isn't much of a concern, head down to Los Angeles, or London during lunch hour and see for yourself.

We get more than enough pollutants in our bodies without adding to the already staggering pollution problem. Even if nobody finds out your running a test pipe, then you can be happy you helped gain a few HP, while at the same time helping to add unnecessary pollution our enviornment.

Just buy a HF cat, you only loose a 1-2 HP, compared to a test pipe.

Hey, Im sure we should all hug a tree or something, but YOU cant prove to me that a cat con saves the environment at all. Take a little gander at this website.

http://www.junkscience.com/news2/catalyt.htm

I believe that the cat con was a good attempt an controling pollution, but its just plain worthless. Do a search on the talon digest for people that have passed emittions tests without cat.

DSM veteran right here

Nah, my first sports car was a 90 GS turbo. It was pure monster power but gave me too much trouble so i had to sell it. Even to this day, i can't help but regret selling it *weep*...I also had two more DSM. An auto Eclipse RS and a manual Eclipse GS. Both were way f***king slow. So now i'm opting for the best of both generation: 2g GSX. Hopefully i can fulfill my dream. God let me have a GSX or TSI awd:):D

Re: DSM veteran right here

Damn, i think that GST was a lemon!!! Brought it from a mechanic. Car started making disturbing sound (like two metals rubbing against one another). Took it to that same mechanic, charged 200 for fixing replacing the triangular plate (one arm was broken). Two days later, same problem again. Was a pure lemon

I passed emission without a cat. On both of my talons. Are cars run relatively clean. And with an S-afc almost any car can. Oh and a 1g has 195-190 horsepower not 210. so you wouldnt quite be at WRX range, It is easy to get there though. just get a full exhaust system and free mods and a K&N.

Along with the trees, why dont you get a bunch of cigarettes, smoke em, give em to everybody you drive by, have them smoke em as well....

Mmmmm...wish you were my neighbor putting poisonous toxins into the air I breath. Thanks! :)

Hope that extra 1.2 hp gets you past that VTEC civic everytime. Its worth it in the long run, hey you and neighbors can always get an iron lung, but beating that civic by 1/10000 more of a second was worth it.

If you cant see it, then its not pollution! Wanna buy some bottled water I bottled myself? Its clear, so must be clean.

Im saying on weighing performace gain vs health benefits, its just a stupid stupid thing to do. Get a 3 inch hiflow cat, you wont notice the difference.

You guys are starting to make me feal bad now. Well if the goverment wants clean air, they should start making the conversion to hydrogen power. I would be more then happy to buy a no pollution vehicle. Even if it is a little spendy, they could make it a requirement for all new cars to be hydrogen powered. After all Hydrogen is the most common thing in the universe along with stupidity.
