I will be removing the head to replace the valve stem seals in the near future. What else should I do to the head while its off the car? I have about $400 budget. Vehicle is 1G Turbo, with 115K miles

So far I have:
new valve stem seals - $25
revised 3G lifters - $80
valve cover gasket - $30
timing belt - will reuse timing belt and tensioner replaced about 5K miles ago

I was thinking:
3 angle valve job - $ (anyone have an idea on what it should cost)

Anything else I can do on my moderate budget? My current goal is 300hp to the crank. bottom end is stock and checked out fine on last compression test.

You could pick up a set of springs and retainers. I just picked up some ss valves off ebay for 120 shipped. New head gasket?
Snap! totally over looked head gasket. I can get OEM for $48, anyone see a problem with me going OEM on a moderately modified engine?

Would love to get some SS Valves, but I am afraid of the quality of some ebay items.

Is it going to be the true OEM MLS, or is it going to be an "OEM" plastic gasket? Your answer will depend on the yes or no.

Also head studs.
Good point, ARP perhaps?

Also I will consider a new timing belt if I can pick up an OEM for a decent price.

ARP's are good.

Why not change the timing belt? That should be a no brainer.

Why not just change the seals with the head still on the car and wait till you have a better budget? To answer you're question though, here's what I would replace at the minimum:

Valve stem seals
OEM composite headgasket
OEM timing belt
Timing belt tensioner
Balance shaft belt
Headstuds

Excellent point, but I decided to remove the head because of the numbers I received from my last leakdown test - 25%-30% from suspected valves. compression was an even 150 across all 4 cylinders.

I imagine balance shaft belt is only if i still have the balance shafts correct? other things on the list i currently have, or on my list.

Moved to General Tech.

Replace your timing belt. It's less than $100 and can give you peace of mind knowing it's new.

You also mentioned eBay for your valves...I wouldn't put much of anything from eBay in there IMO.

There are two things, that you could do:
-headgasket of course + decide on valves/size ,finish, etc./
- port and polish/if you want,or can afford/
All the other parts like cams springs, seals, lifters can be installed later without removing the head.

Just wanted to let you know I scored some ss valves from Engnbldr on ebay also. Paid a total of $56 shipped for the complete set. A buddy of mine is also letting me have the valve springs of his Evo.

So to summarize for the head I have:
3G Lifters
Viton Valve stem seals
SS Valves (standard size)
Evo valve springs

Also decided to takle on spare block. I have:
6 bolt block
Ross pistons with Ross racing rings
Eagle H-beam Rods
ACL Bearings

I figure I still need:
Engine Gasket Set - would like OEM but may have to settle for Topline
Timing Belt - OEM, or should I option for Gates?

Anything I may need besides the fluids?

You can pick up a porting kit from Eastwood, and do a nice gasket match, or you can get a how-to book, be PATIENT, and go for the gusto. If you have the right ideas, have a plethora of information available to you, and make the right decisions, you can do a damn good job of your head.

As for the MUST DO list, for GOD'S SAKE take the head to a cylinder head shop, and have it checked and decked. It runs usually around 130 bucks, and that's just piece of mind. It's better to know your head is flat, than to pop your headgasket minutes after firing her up.

MD349347 Metal Mitsu 4 Layer Head gasket (Factory Part No.)
I believe the OEM gasket kit already comes with a head gasket. However I will keep the 4 Layer as an option if the budget allows.

Absolutely, head is going to machine shop for a 3 angle valve job. Also wanted to add ARP head studs to my need to get list.

There are twothings, that come to mind:
-porting/polishing
-valves/valve guides,as Sean 485 mentioned/

You have to determine what size of valves you are going to run/oversize, or stock/ and if you have funds-port and polish the head.

The rest could be done with the head ON the car-springs, cams, lifters, rockers, etc. You should also check DSM tuners, there is thread about head oil port mod. It's started by a member, named Bogus SVO
