When I turn my steering wheel to the right or left I notice a clicking noise coming from the underneath of the front of the car. Happens when stopped and turning the wheel as well.

Before posting I tried researching this issue and found too many possibilities and was hoping someone on here could help narrow it down.

CV joints? Control arms? Suspension related? Tranny related?

Car is a 1997 GSX automatic.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

I've been battling a similar issue with the car clicking when I turn right, and after replacing both axles, the problem still persists. Even the stealership didn't know what was wrong with it, and told me to continue driving it until the problem got worse so they could identify it.

Shadow_FIX. I actually read your threads when doing some research on my issue before posting.

Here's an addition to my original post. When the car is in park, I hear a creaking noise when I turn the steering wheel either right or left.

And the noise when I an driving and turning is more of a "thunk" noise than a "click".

Can any of this be tranny related?

I had the same problem and it was because my axle was not completely seated into the middle shaft bearing so everytime i turned it would make a clicking sound
When I installed the axle into the intermediate shaft I got it seated as much as I could...I doubt it could go any further and it looked like it was all the way in...I guess it's worth a check but I'm not too excited about taking it all apart again :(

I had that problem once myself. A shop installed new axles and didn't seat one all the way. Drivetrain felt like it was binding- I had to point it out to the dimbulbs and they re-seated the axle.

Doesn't anyone take cars for a test-drive after doing drivetrain work?

Try this: Have a friend get in the car and make the noise happen. CAREFULLY, start feeling around to see if you can pinpoint the noise (balljoints, rack and pinion, etc.)

Does it happen with the car in park and not stepping on the brakes?

Can you hear it transfer through the steering column at all?

Also, see if the noise goes away with the car on jack stands (with the suspension hanging).

Your lucky: At least the noise happens when the car is stopped (this should make it much easier to find).

If it creaks and thunks then I would first suspect ball joints, do what blue said but try pushing up on the bottom of the tire. If there is any movement replace the LCA,

P.S you won't be able to feel any movement in and out on the ball joints while habging, you HAVE to push the wheel up and down.
