I'm looking for a decent place to buy inexpensive paint. I'm going to be spraying part of my bay this winter and have been researching with no luck. I went to a local store and they wanted 130 dollars for one pint of R87!! That to me seemed a bit high.

Does anyone have a good reference for inexpensive paint? I don't need high quality paint, just something that will be red and stick :p

Check out summit racing. They have added alot of colors to there paint selection and they have kits with the supplies you'll need. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the suggestions. I checked them out but the only thing they offer in my color is a rattle can :(

For the record, I'm looking for paint to use with my gun.

I called a local store for paint when I painted my tsi, they wanted like 580 or somthing for a gallon. I ended up using duplicolor auto paint. I don't know if you can get it mixed anywhere but its 20$ a quart. It's not as hard as the expensive paint but for an engine bay I don't see why it matters if you get swirl marks. Here's a pic of the paint before I wetsanded and buffed the clear.

Bumity bump...

Still looking for budget paint. A lot of sites I've been given don't have R87. I'm not looking for a CLOSE color.

I really don't want to pay 130 bucks for one pint for paint that nobody will see...

I also don't have a local paint store that sells automotive paint other than Gervic(sherman williams)

I know you want to paint it, but have you looked into any kind of liner? Normally you can do it for pretty cheap and everything I've seen has been very nice. And can I ask why you are trying to stay away from a rattle can? If you practice enough, a rattle can would save you quite a bit of money compared to what it costs to mix paint, etc.

I actually was able to find some BC/CC paint at a local auto parts store. I was surprised they had it. I got a quart of Omni X13 Black (1G Black) for about $30.

Mac, if you haven't already try at the small local parts stores. Of course, the red you're looking for is going to be more than the black I bought, but can't be much worse than $130/pint.

130 was just for the paint, no reducer, clear hardener. However, I don't think I will be clearing it. The stock paint in the bay is not cleared correct? I also thought about just getting a paint/clear mix(They do make that correct? ) but I do not want anything flashy, I just want a fresh coat.

If you have time to check that would be awesome! Like I said the code is R87.

A rattle can can come out nice I agree, but I have the gun, compressor etc, so I figured why not. NOW If I can not find cheap paint in a can, I will be ordering R87 in a rattle can :)

Red is the most expensive color, that's about spot on I paid $60 for half a pint last time I bought it.

Do not use the dupli-color $20 stuff from autoparts store it's lacquer.

You could try NAPA's line of paints but my guess is it's going to be the same price.

less than half a pint, remember you need to reduce usually 2:1. Also this is BC/CC you will need to clear on top.

NAPA sells Martin Senour paints. Their the parent company for Sherwin Williams. They have several different grades of base coat. If you are doing an all over their lowest price base coats are good enough. If you are trying to get a good match for a partial refinish you should go with the highest grade. I have used both the top of the line and the cheapest and both have a good finish and even the bottom of the line clear coat holds out well. Dollar for dollar Martin Senour or Sherwin Williams is probably the best value. I have sprayed Dupont, Sikins, PPG, ICI, Martin Senour, and Sherwin Williams. They are all about the same just price is different.
If your color isn't a metallic then I would go with a single stage paint not Base and Clear Coat. The gloss is still there but much less expensive and easier.
