New build - leaking coolant from timing side. I pulled the water pump, new gasket with a nice rtv style sealer, torqued to spec and everything re-assembled, it seems from the front of the car the timing belt is bringing coolant up? and it throws it forward, up and onto the window. It seems to be puddling up on the power steering pump mount...I can't for the life of me track where this is coming from. Can anyone give me some advice please? 2g 7 bolt.

It was a brand new o-ring with a good seal of RTV in the water pump it's self (where the o-ring went into). Once I pulled the pump it took a pry bar to get it to let go over the o-ring, and the second time I put it back on I did a brand new o-ring and rtv again. I didn't take a good look at that though...hmm. Do they tare that easily? When I got the car, that area from water pump to that long pipe was CAKED with RTV...perhaps it's out of shape?

Edit: It was not leaking cold, but after about 1 minute of running it started to throw coolant.

Yeah, its a normal place to leak. Easy way to do it would be a new o-ring and put some oil on it so it slides into the water pump easier.

Nope! I've made that mistake. Only lubricant you're supposed to put on it is coolant or water. Once everything is bolted up, it needs a few heat cycles to seal. I've seen some people use waterpump specific grey RTV but I prefer to use none. DO NOT lubricate with any oil products or it won't seal. Even the FSM says not to lubricate except with either coolant or water.

Did you let the RTV cure for 12 hours before filling or running?

I didn't do it to mine haha. I just thought it would be okay, but I guess not haha. I used RTV on mine with an old o-ring and it sealed up perfectly within an hour. I didn't want to wait 3 days for an o-ring. No leaks yet. But I have a few spare o-rings incase it does.

I think I waited about 2 or 3 hours...not that I was rushing it, but this is the first motor I've ever built and I'm anxious to see it running lol. Perhaps it is that o-ring...I'm going to try pulling the t-stat housing side instead of pulling the water pump...that took so friggin long. Does multiple heat cycles help it seal? Would you advise me pulling it and getting all that rtv out of there?

You may have got lucky with the old o-ring and RTV. I made the oil mistake my first time. After all my work, the thing leaked like a fucking sieve. I tore my first o-ring then did it a second time. I can't tell you how pissed I was when the 2nd one leaked! Let it heat cycle a couple times and it hasn't dropped a drip again.

I was lucky as hell. The old o-ring was shot to hell and back but yet I reused it. But thats also why I have spares lol. Just incase. And op, its quickest to pull it from the thermostat side. I would never pull the timing belt and water pump to fix that o-ring lol. Seems like a waste of time.

Reason I did that is because I thought I used the wrong water pump gasket. The one I got in my kit didn't seem to line up quite correctly, so I pulled it and put a proper one on there. Now for the sake of doing things right, I'm gonna go pull it again but just that big ass water pipe.

In order to pull it you'll need to loosen the water pipe. I frankly would let it heat cycle a few times. Maybe you'll get lucky. If not, you can always pull the waterpipe and replace the o-ring. Since you're already used RTV, I don't think you'll get it all out. I'd just re-RTV it after you replace the o-ring if it's bad.

You're welcome. Good luck with it. It's all a learning experience. If you plan on keeping it long term, I'd recommend a set of factory service manuals.
Ohhh I definitely do. Hey the car came with a Chiltons and Haynes manual...only real use I could find for them were starting small fires to light the heater haha. Need to find a mitsu manual somewhere.

Just wanted to update with my findings. Head gasket did not seal correctly causing coolant to mix with oil, on top of that - it was simply a bad water pump. Pulling an all nighter and working on cars do not go together at all.

That sucks dude. I do all nighters all the time working on my cars. Get 4 friends and 3 cases of beer, corona, and finish her up. Lol.

Haha, best part about it is the bad water pump is still on the car...I ran outta life to finish it up, auto parts stores weren't open at that time either lol. Now to figure out my idle issues.
